My study and preaching of the Psalms began in March 2016. As I studied the various psalmists (known and unknown), there were many times I felt like I was reading their personal journals. The more I searched the history of each Psalm, the more I felt like I was there with the psalmist each time. I witnessed Heman thinking darkness was his only companion (Psalm 88:18). I experienced the feeling of almost backsliding with Asaph (Psalm 73:2). And I cried with David when a close companion betrayed him (Psalm 55:12-14).

Faith is belief in God and His Word. It is believing that God is who He says He is. Trust is faith in action. While faith and trust are similar and are often used interchangeably, there are some differences. Faith can be easy when things go right and blessings follow you. But, trust looks at a bleak situation and remains faithful regardless of the outcome. This is what trusting the Lord is all about.

It is often noted that Psalm 118:8, “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man,” is the middle verse of the Bible. If you only used the English definition of mystery, you may think of it as mysterious and ominous. But, when you define it Biblically, you realize that the mysteries of God are meant to be understood, taught, and applied. That is why Paul said, “Behold, I will explain a mystery to you.” (1 Corinthians 15:51, CEV). Therefore, you can and must understand God’s mysteries. They are solved, and God wants everyone to comprehend them. And, for those God has called to preach, He wants them to be faithful stewards, sharing them with His Church!

On March 13, 2016, I began an expository sermon series based on the Psalms. By the time I finish preaching them and writing the books, I will publish nine volumes. I desire that this, and all subsequent books, help you see yourself in the lives of the various psalmists as they share their ups and downs and what they did to glorify God in all things. Unprejudiced, equitable, unbiased, honest, and just are just a few synonymous words to describe the word impartial. The word impartial means to treat or affect all equally. Regardless of the situations the psalmists found themselves in, they gave impartial praise to the One True God. There were times they felt like praising God, and times they didn't; yet, regardless of their circumstance, the 17 Psalms in this volume highlight their adoration and exaltation of Almighty God.

The written word of mankind is a revelatory tool, offering insight into a person, place, or thing. When it’s used to express ideas about a person, the reader gains insight into that person’s character and, in some sense, comes to know that person. The Holy Bible is God’s written Word and a revelatory tool, offering insight into God’s attributes and thus revealing God’s character. Through studying His Word, a person can learn about Him and come to a greater understanding of His true identity.

A proverb is a short statement expressing a principle of truth for practical, godly living. In Hebrew, the word means “comparison” or “to be like.” Ultimately, Proverbs contains many thought-provoking lessons that transcend time and culture. A verb is a word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence. So, in titling this book, The Verbs, I intend to explain the timeless wisdom principles taught in Proverbs. Each chapter and verse should call you to action as you heed the truth in the 915 “verbs” in this wise poetic book.
