Khalil Gibran est un poète et artiste peintre libanais, il a séjourné en Europe et passé la majeure partie de sa vie aux États-Unis. Publié en 1923 et composé de vingt-six textes poétiques, son recueil "Le prophète" est devenu particulièrement populaire pendant les années 1960 dans le courant de la contre-culture et les mouvements New Age. Depuis qu'il a été publié, "Le prophète" n'a jamais été épuisé. Après avoir été traduit dans plus de vingt langues, il est devenu l'un des best-sellers des livres du XXe siècle aux États-Unis.

Whilst the notion of the Mystic East and Oriental wisdom was greatly romanticised by the Victorians and others, the shadow of Colonialism has smudged the view. These great cultures are some of humanity’s earliest, their works, their art some of its most daring and most accomplished. In these 50 poems across 50 poets we hope, at least in part, to rebalance our view of this subject. We begin in the 6th century BC and travel with a poet’s words and eyes across India, China, Persia and many other places in between.

The beloved prophet Almustafa (meaning “The Chosen One”) has lived within the city walls of Orphalese for twelve years. He has walked among the people and formed a deep connection to the place, but he knows this is not where he ultimately belongs. On the seventh day of Ielool (“the month of reaping”), Almustafa climbs a hill beyond the boundaries of the city wall and gazes out across the misty sea. He is filled with joy as he catches sight of the ship that has come to free him from exile. His series of sermons form the 28 prose poems of this book.

Gibran Khalil Gibran was born on 6th January 1883, in the village of Bsharri, Beirut Vilayet, then part of the Ottoman Empire. His first book in English, ‘The Madman’, became an international phenomenon. Gibran was regarded as a literary rebel and a leading figure of the Arabic literary Renaissance and made influential contributions to Western poetry, stories and thought.
