"Le quattro stagioni di Giovanni Gourdon" si incentra su quattro fatidiche giornate nella vita di un uomo profondamente radicato nella sua terra natia nel sud della Francia. Lo seguiamo dalla Primavera fino all'Inverno, e sebbene la catastrofe sembri sempre incombente, la speranza non si esaurisce mai. Giovanni Gourdon vive con lo zio prete nel borgo di Dourgues, non distante dal fiume Durance. Abita lì da dieci anni, dieci anni colmi di frasi in latino e di sermoni, ma principalmente trascorsi a imparare a conoscere i flussi e riflussi di quel piccolo angolo di fiume.

"Io accuso" è una lettera scritta nel gennaio 1898 dallo scrittore francese Emile Zola in reazione all'affare Dreyfus, un caso che sconvolse la società francese del tardo XIX secolo. In questo testo Zola rivolge un appello pubblico all'allora presidente Félix Faure. Afferma che Alfred Dreyfus, un ebreo alsaziano, è stato ingiustamente accusato di aver divulgato informazioni alla Germania. Egli riprova la sentenza che condanna Dreyfus all'ergastolo sull'Isola del Diavolo nella Guyana francese. Accusa il governo francese di incarceramento illecito e di antisemitismo.

Quando Zola aveva circa vent'anni, dopo essere stato bocciato al termine delle scuole, si trovò a lavorare nella libreria di Louis Hachette. Utilizzò il suo tempo libero per scrivere queste storie colme di immaginazione e fantasia. Tutte e nove le storie ruotano attorno al personaggio di Ninetta, cui vengono raccontate. Vista l'età dell'autore ai tempi, e il fatto che la maggior parte dei personaggi nella narrazione hanno all'incirca la stessa età, queste storie sono un'eccellente testimonianza della gioventù e di com'era essere giovani nella Francia dell'800.
