The times of the Spanish Inquisition. A prisoner awaits the verdict of the cruel judges. His hopes for freedom—much like burning candles—rapidly diminish. He is sentenced to death and confined in a chamber that resembles a tomb. The vision of impending death terrifies him, causing him to lose consciousness several times. The image of the Father of Time painted on the ceiling, along with the deadly pendulum and a mysterious well, does not help in finding solace or preparing for death.

An unamed narrator marries Morella, a woman who delves into mysticism. As a result of her experimentations her soul can never die, but her physical form continues to deteriorate. She spends her time in bed and teaches her husband the black arts. Realizing her curse, her husband, the narrator, becomes frightened and wishes for his wife's death and eternal peace. She dies in childbirth but her soul passes into the new baby....

Relato en el que una misteriosa peste ataca la ciudad de Próspero, príncipe de una ficticia nación, al cual le complacía darse todo tipo de placeres, de los que un rey puede disfrutar, como el buen gusto, las artes, los bailes orquestados y fiestas rodeadas de diversión y sarcasmo. Al darse cuenta de que la peste atacaba a toda su región, decide encerrarse en su castillo, junto con varios cientos de nobles de su corte los cuales intentan escapar de la Muerte roja.

El Gato Negro este corto pero terrorífico relato , quizás sea de los que mejor expresa las atormentadas batallas que tenían lugar en la mente de Edgar Allan Poe. El papel todo lo soporta y en toda obra se puede encontrar una u otra simbología. Para mí el gato negro que tanto atormenta al protagonista, no es otra cosa que la idea del mal, que constantemente se encuentra en tránsito del subconsciente al consciente y que o bien se tiene una gran fortaleza de voluntad o acaba obligándonos a hacer cosas que pueden ser terribles.

The story concerns the attempts by a prince and his followers to shield themselves from a terrible plague which is devastating the surrounding area and to carry on living lives of pleasure. Their attempts ultimately prove futile. The Red Death is the name of the infectious disease which causes people to die within 30 minutes. Those who are infected bleed profusely from their skin, especially their faces, before they die. Some six months after the arrival of Prince Prospero's guests, a masked ball is held for them.

"The Black Cat" is the story of an alcoholic who is driven insane by his addiction. He tortures and kills his cat, Pluto. Then, a stray cat that looks almost exactly like the cat he murdered except for a gallows mark on its chest follows him home and drives him even more insane.
