As young Lord Hadley and his companion Edward Dudley travel along a dark, coastal road, they encounter a young girl pinioned by a fallen wall. They rescue her and alert her father, stationed on the cliff-top, apparently watching for something or someone, before continuing their journey to the home of Sir Arthur Adelon. "The Five Jars" (1922) is a novel by M. R. James. The story is about a man who can get superpowers using the special material found in the jars. Our hero has enemies from the other world, they try to get his jars. Speaking cats and attacking bats are all making the brilliant plot more captivating.

'A School Story' is an intriguing ghost tale set in a private school near London. During a lesson one of the boys finds himself writing a strange sentence in Latin which he himself cannot properly explain. When the teacher reads it, he turns pale and appears to become suddenly very ill. A week or so later, again during class, another even more mysterious Latin message appears...and then events turn very strange and sinister indeed.

I never really knew just how life-saving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation could be. By all means, I shouldn't be feeling nearly as pissy over the course of this vacation as I am. 'Wailing Well' is the story of a group of boy scouts camping somewhere on the downs in the south of England who are warned not to go into a particular field which contains a single clump of trees. A local shepherd relates a strange story about the place, which he refers to as Wailing Well. He claims to have seen four skeletal figures walking through the field, three women and one man, all walking towards the clump of trees where the well is. One of the young scouts determines to investigate for himself....

Mr. Abney, the owner of Aswarby, a tall, square, red-brick mansion built in the reign of Anne, proved himself to be a very evil man. No one knew more of the religious beliefs of the later pagans than did the owner of Aswarby. He performed hideous experiments on such persons as could conveniently be removed without occasioning a gap in society. The final "victim" - to employ a word repugnant in the highest degree to his feelings - must be his cousin, Stephen Elliott, a 12-year-old orphan.

Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936), who wrote as M. R. James, was an English author, mediaeval scholar, and provost of King's College, Cambridge, and of Eton College. He is best known for his outstanding ghost stories. James reinvented the ghost story for the modern audience by moving away from Gothic elements and using realistic contemporary settings. His protagonists and plots often reflect his own antiquarian interests. Accordingly he is known as the originator of the "antiquarian ghost story".
