Hosted by writer and activist Scarlett Curtis, To the Woman is a series that celebrates the great women of the world through a series of letters, be they to our mothers, lifelong friends or the women we are yet to meet.

The writer and filmmaker Kevin Toolis joins Holly Newson in the Audible Studios to discuss his book, My Father's Wake: How the Irish Teach Us to Live, Love and Die. In this intimate and original memoir, Kevin gives us an insight into the history of the Irish wake amongst the backdrop of the death and wake of his father. Kevin tells Holly about the inspiration of the book as well as the process of researching the history of the Irish wake.

Gordon began her career in journalism, working for papers such as The Daily Telegraph. Alongside her journalistic career, Bryony has written several books which document her struggles with depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and addiction. Speaking out about mental health has given Gordon a new perspective and drive on the matter, prompting her to run the London marathon two years in a row for mental health charities and start a support group, 'Mental Health Mates'.

Joining us from home is post-doctoral research scientist Dr Tim Gregory, whose book Meteorite brings us not just the story of our planet, but the origins of the solar system in a comprehensible form. Dr Tim Gregory grew up in Yorkshire and has always had a fascination with science, mainly space and rocks.

Joining us in the Audible Studios to talk about his latest book, Me and the Table, is former professional snooker player and current commentator for the BBC and ITV Stephen Hendry. Best known for dominating snooker in the 1990s. He won the World Championship seven times, became the youngest professional snooker player aged 16 in 1985 and, in 1990, was the youngest-ever world champion at the age of 21. His autobiography, Me and the Table, was published in September 2018.

An authority on environmental and social change, reporter for The One Show and writer of a weekly ethical living column for The Observer, Lucy Siegle has published her latest book, Turning the Tide on Plastic: How Humanity (And You) Can Make Our Globe Clean Again. Lucy Siegle talks to us about how she first became engaged with environmental issues, how bad the plastic pandemic is that threatens our globe and what we can do to change it.

Joining us in the Audible Studios to discuss his latest novel, A Shout in the Ruins, is writer, poet and US Army veteran Kevin Powers. An Iraq war veteran, serving between 2004 and 2005, Kevin Powers is the author behind The Yellow Birds, which won the PEN/Hemingway Award and the Guardian First Book Award and was a National Book Award finalist. Following on from his debut poetry collection in 2014, Power’s latest published book is A Shout in the Ruins.

Visiting the Audible Studios for the first time is stand-up comedian and award-winning blogger Sam Avery, who's here to discuss his first book, Confessions of a Learner Parent. Having performed thousands of stand-up shows across the world, Sam Avery can count host, presenter, writer and mental health advocate on his list of achievements. He started his award-winning parenting blog, which documents in hilarious fashion the highs and lows of being a new parent to twin boys, in 2015.

Mike Brooks joins us in the Audible Studios to chat about his Keiko series and the latest instalment, Dark Deeds. He tells us how he juggles a full-time job with writing and what we can expect of protagonist Captain Ichabod Drift and paints us a picture of the world in the books - set in space in the future.

Tyce, born and raised in Edinburgh, attended Oxford University to study English literature. She then completed a law conversion course at City University, going on to work as a criminal barrister for almost 10 years. After having difficulties juggling childcare for her young children alongside her demanding work life, Tyce decided to leave her job as a barrister. Tyce's desire to write was growing stronger as time passed, and with a manuscript or two on the go, she applied for an MA in creative writing at the University of East Anglia.

In April 2019, Stokes was named in the England's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup, and after a sensational win was declared Man of the Match, an accolade he has been awarded many times before, such as a record-breaking three times within fourteen games in 2017. The World Cup win, alongside the 2019 Ashes, has been brought to life in On Fire: My Story of an Unbelievable Summer for English Cricket, Stokes’ newest book.

Kaur has always had a passion for education and social justice. She has an academic background in history and gender studies, and has worked as a secondary school teacher across London. She’s known for using her poetry to tackle tough topics such as gender discrimination, mental health and other taboo issues within the South Asian community. We'll be talking to Jaspreet Kaur about her latest venture, her debut non-fiction book Brown Girl Like Me. We'll discuss microaggressions, menstruation and mental health, as well as how to build a foundation of self-love.

Joining us from home to chat about her debut book, No One Can Change Your Life Except for You, is television and radio presenter Laura Whitmore. We spoke about how to channel our optimistic side, techniques to build self-belief, how to better give and receive compliments and lots more.

After his first ever stand-up, Jack Dee was encouraged to tour the circuit, and after winning the Best Stage Newcomer awards in 1991, Dee began to grace our screens with The Jack Dee Show. Since then, Dee has performed sell-out stand-up shows, written and starred in sitcoms such as Lead Balloon and hosted shows such as I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue and Have I Got News for You.

Joining us in the Audible Studios to talk about her book Wally Funk’s Race for Space is science writer and broadcaster Sue Nelson. Wally Funk was one of the 13 members of the 1961 Women in Space Programme. The female aviation pioneer also became the first female air safety investigator for the NTSB and the first civilian flight instructor at Fort Sill, with over 19,000 flight hours. Sue Nelson, former BBC science correspondent and Radio 4 presenter, documents Wally’s extraordinary life in her new book, Wally Funk’s Race for Space, published in 2018.

Joining us in the Audible Studios to talk about his latest book, Saving Britain: How We Must Change to Prosper in Europe, is political economist, writer and journalist Will Hutton. Alongside Will Hutton’s work as writer for the Observer, the former BBC journalist is also the Chair of the Big Innovation Centre and current Principal of Hertford College, University of Oxford. Author of 11 books, his most recognised and acclaimed title is The State We’re In, first published in 1995.

Beginning her professional career as a fashion journalist and stylist, Scanlon has gone on to become a household name at the BBC, fronting documentaries on BBC Three, and presenting Your Home Made Perfect. Scanlon has not stopped there: she has also presented a BBC Radio 2 show and often presents The One Show too. Scanlon has hosted her own podcast since 2019 titled Thanks A Million which has proved to be hugely popular, currently on its fifth series, and her book Joyrider is now on the (virtual and physical) shelves.
