"The Mysterious Island" is an adventure novel by Jules Verne. During the American Civil War, five captives of war agree to escape by hijacking a balloon. After flying in a massive storm for quite a few days, the group crash-lands on a cliff-bound, volcanic, unknown island. The five can survive on the island, making fire, pottery, bricks, nitroglycerin, iron, a simple electric telegraph, a home, even a seagoing ship, and they figure out their geographical whereabouts. There is also a brooding mystery on the island in the form of seemingly strange incidents happening.

La denominación de arte gótico para clasificar al estilo artístico que floreció desde el siglo XIII al XV en toda Europa parece la debemos al Vasari, que en su libro critico e histórico del arte europeo le define con este nombre por sospechar su procedencia germánica. A esa convencional división cronológica se le añade la necesidad de reducir a dos temas la arquitectura renacentista española. Ante tamaña dificultad, hemos huido de los caminos habituales, buscando la mejor realización práctica de los temas. De este modo, podemos asegurar una visión completa de la arquitectura renacentista a través de las series 24 y de esta.

Dentro de los estilos que rodean los últimos años del siglo XIX sólo uno merece la calificación de original: el modernismo catalán, exaltado en la figura de Antonio Gaudí. Esta manifestación va a ser, como es natural, el vértice y piedra de toque de la selección presente. Pero en la misma época construyen en España muchos otros arquitectos representantes de tendencias nacionales o importadas que no podíamos dejar marginados a la hora de presentar una visión completa de la arquitectura española.
