About this listen

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A TIME MUST-READ BOOK OF THE YEAR • From the iconic internationally bestselling author of the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy: A forbidden affair erupts volcanically amid a decadent tropical wedding in this outrageous comedy of manners.

A MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK: The New York Times, The Washington Post, TIME, Entertainment Weekly, Cosmopolitan, CNN, Lit Hub, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Reader's Digest, BookRiot, SheReads, PureWow, Publishers Weekly

"Imagine Crazy Rich Asians mated with Saltburn and you've got Lies and Weddings—a heavenly summertime read!"—Plum Sykes, New York Times best-selling author of Bergdorf Blondes

Rufus Leung Gresham, future Earl of Greshambury and son of a former Hong Kong supermodel has a problem: the legendary Gresham Trust has been depleted by decades of profligate spending, and behind all the magazine covers and Instagram stories manors and yachts lies nothing more than a gargantuan mountain of debt. The only solution, put forth by Rufus’s scheming mother, is for Rufus to attend his sister’s wedding at a luxury eco-resort, a veritable who’s-who of sultans, barons, and oligarchs, and seduce a woman with money.

Should he marry Solène de Courcy, a French hotel heiress with honey blond tresses and a royal bloodline? Should he pursue Martha Dung, the tattooed venture capital genius who passes out billions like lollipops? Or should he follow his heart, betray his family, squander his legacy, and finally confess his love to the literal girl next door, the humble daughter of a doctor, Eden Tong? When a volcanic eruption burns through the nuptials and a hot mic exposes a secret tryst, the Gresham family plans—and their reputation—go up in flames.

Can the once-great dukedom rise from the ashes? Or will a secret tragedy, hidden for two decades, reveal a shocking twist?

In a globetrotting tale that takes us from the black sand beaches of Hawaii to the skies of Marrakech, from the glitzy bachelor pads of Los Angeles to the inner sanctums of England’s oldest family estates, Kevin Kwan unfurls a juicy, hilarious, sophisticated and thrillingly plotted story of love, money, murder, sex, and the lies we tell about them all.

"A hilarious, richly detailed family affair that takes place around the world, from Hawaii to Venice to Los Angeles to the English countryside."—Megan McCluskey and Olivia B. Waxman, Time

"If you loved Crazy Rich Asians, Kevin Kwan’s latest won’t disappoint....Alliances are made and unmade. Fortunes are won and lost. Rich people, trying to get richer, outwit themselves. Poor girls, armed with only their stubborn integrity, stake a claim on happiness. And the laugh lines arrive punctually....Kwan has a gimlet eye.”—Louis Bayard, The Washington Post

Hilariously full of juicy gossiping, but the reader’s cadence is frustrating

Just starting the book and the story is gripping and should be hilarious, if not for the distracting constantly pausing cadence of the reader.

Good story , annoying narration

The narrator was “acting” too much and it got really annoying at times . The story was based on Dr Thorne and it was interesting and fun !

Great story

Love Kevin Kwan’s stories…. The narrator sucked. Her voice sounded shill.

Can’t wait for the third book!

Typical, good Kevin Kwan, but. the. narrator…

If you enjoy Kevin Kwan’s other books, you’ll enjoy this one. It’s funny, has heartfelt moments, and shows us the excesses of another (crazy) world.

However, the narration… some of the voices were downright cringey, and I couldn’t understand why she would randomly pause in the middle of sentences, especially when a character was talking. People. Don’t talk. Like this in. Real. Life. …but that’s how many of the characters spoke, and it was jarring and weird. I’d rather read the book version of this one another day… I won’t be doing the audiobook again. Ugh.

Great story, terrible caricatures of voices (listen to preview!)

I was really looking forward to this book. Kwan has another success with this one. However, the audio was insufferable. While the storytelling narration and the 2-3 main characters sounded fine, the voices she uses for the supporting characters were nails on a chalkboard. She made the countess sound like Mrs. Doubt fire with COPD. She makes EVERY character have a million unnecessary pauses, like they’re all breathless at all times.

A Fun Story with a Disappointing Narrator

The story was enjoyable — over the top and funny. I really enjoy Kevin Kwan and laughed out loud at the alternative text generated by ChatGPT.

But the narrator just wasn’t a good fit. When voicing a British character, she was fine. But her “American” accents were all very one-note and all sounded like Valley Girls. Arabella was difficult to listen to, with lots of screeching and yelling. It made for unpleasant listening.

Kevin Kwan’s great style and his memorable characters.

The narration of the characters was awkward and off cadence. At times, the narrator sounds like a child trying to imitate her parents.

Story was okay; narration was atrocious

The story is no Crazy Rich Asians, but it was compelling enough. The narration was awful. Many of the voices were in short stocatto bursts. Some characters were too breathy. Others were too shrill. It really distracted you away from the story.

Good story, bad narration

The narrator’s voices for some of the female voices were silly, verging on sounding like caricatures. The volume also fluctuated, making the listening experience not very enjoyable overall.
