About this listen

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!

“This Golden Girls meets James Bond thriller is a journey you want to be part of.”—Buzzfeed

Older women often feel invisible, but sometimes that’s their secret weapon.

They’ve spent their lives as the deadliest assassins in a clandestine international organization, but now that they're 60 years old, four women friends can’t just retire—it’s kill or be killed in this action-packed thriller by New York Times best-selling and Edgar Award-nominated author Deanna Raybourn.

Billie, Mary Alice, Helen, and Natalie have worked for the Museum, an elite network of assassins, for 40 years. Now their talents are considered old-school and no one appreciates what they have to offer in an age that relies more on technology than people skills.

When the foursome is sent on an all-expenses paid vacation to mark their retirement, they are targeted by one of their own. Only the Board, the top-level members of the Museum, can order the termination of field agents, and the women realize they’ve been marked for death.

Now to get out alive they have to turn against their own organization, relying on experience and each other to get the job done, knowing that working together is the secret to their survival. They’re about to teach the Board what it really means to be a woman—and a killer—of a certain age.

Critic reviews

“[An] unpredictable and propulsive romp of a thriller…an inventive and distinctly feminist escapade.”—Oprah Daily

“A singular suspense story thanks to its deftly fluctuating tone, which is by turns comical, violent and unexpectedly affecting…it’s impossible not to root for these dangerous dames and their refusal to let themselves be put on the ash heap—a phrase that, in this thriller, should be taken literally.”—The Washington Post

“A sharp and witty thriller.”—PopSugar

What a fantastic thriller! Every woman of that certain age can identify with the these characters.
The very first chapter totally grabs your attention and so do the chapters that follow.
The people in the book are absolutely my friends. The plot moved quickly and since this is my first review, I will stop here. I do not want to give anything away…

We Are That Age!

Very entertaining although the narrators accents were all over the place when she was supposed to be one accent at a time save for when she was the masseuse. Still, a fun read

A lot of fun

Excellent story, as always. I listened to it in 2 days. The 2 narrators were perfect. I thought the story flowed nicely and the time switch was handled well.

Excellent story!

Two things I didn’t like.
First to paraphrase another reviewer, this book is insulting to women. James Bond/Sean Connery was well o to his 50s and no one blinked.
These very capable women in their 60s are expected to be as immobile as 80-90 year olds. Jane Fonda can still kick her leg up to the sink!

Secondly, while Thursday Evening Murder Club is a good inspiration, this book simply isn’t as charming or straightforward.

Insulting and imitation of Thurs Eve Murder Club

just a well written, easy read with a couple of chuckles and some relatable content for women.

Easy, fun

I really enjoyed this book. As an older woman, I could relate to the characters and how they felt, their experiences of love, loss and life. So often we are underestimated because we're not up on the latest technology or fads, but experience and cunning goes a long way. These ladies showed they had the ability physically and mentally to outsmart those who came for them. They are my heroes. The book was well written and the narrator did a great job bringing the characters to life. It was full of acton, reflection and of lives well lived.

This book was great

this is a really good book. so interesting with kick ass ladies of a certain age. great to read about women who know what they are doing and will get the job done. so tired of reading about young women crying about a broke nail.

wow, really good!

What a romp. And so reaffirming that women don’t reach their sell by dates in their 50’s. These gals rock. Sharp, witty, original plot. Strong women at any age kick ass. Recommend whole-heartedly.

Wow! Excellent book says a reader of a certain age

I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. My only criticism is the frequent references to 60 being “old.” I hope this ends up being the first of a series!

Loved this!
