About this listen

In this fast-paced historical thriller, the number one New York Times best-selling author introduces Archer, a WWII veteran forced to investigate a small-town murder - or risk returning to prison.

It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women.

The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail. Within a single night, his search for gainful employment - and a stiff drink - leads him to a local bar, where he is hired for what seems like a simple job: to collect a debt owed to a powerful local businessman, Hank Pittleman.

Soon Archer discovers that recovering the debt won't be so easy. The indebted man has a furious grudge against Hank and refuses to pay; Hank's clever mistress has her own designs on Archer; and both Hank and Archer's stern parole officer, Miss Crabtree, are keeping a sharp eye on him.

When a murder takes place right under Archer's nose, police suspicions rise against the ex-convict, and Archer realizes that the crime could send him right back to prison...if he doesn't use every skill in his arsenal to track down the real killer.

"Listeners will find Archer, as performed by Ballerini, an appealing character.... Ballerini expertly differentiates the many characters, male and female." (AudioFile Magazine)

Editor's Pick

Narration brings this high-stakes crime novel to life
"I took note of One Good Deed because it’s a standalone novel from David Baldacci, it’s set in 1949, and because the protagonist is a veteran *and* an ex-con. The fact that Edoardo Ballerini narrates the story, however, pushed it to the top of my must-listen list. His performance brings out the distinctiveness of each character, and adds depth and nuance, especially to the protagonist—what a great summer listen!"

Stick with it!

I started several times to give up on this book. Frankly, the first 90% of the book is laborious and boring. But the whole thing comes to gather beautifully in the end.Every book David Baldacci has written is in my audible library. Thisis my least favorite.

A delight

This is an excellent listen. The vocabulary and narrator really evoke the time period. The characters are believable and easy to relate to. I enjoyed the small references to feminism and the foreshadowing of where things are heading.

A blast from the past

David takes me to the time post WWII. Folks lived their lives with passion and strong feelings about right and wrong. I hope this is just the beginning for Archer and not a one and done. Please bring us more Archer!

Great insight into a WE11Vet

I wasn’t sure that I was going to like this book. But it didn’t take long for me to b drawn in and then I couldn’t put it down. My father fought in WW11 & this book gave me a better insight into what he went through. The story was intriguing and the psychological study between characters I loved. Looking for another Archer book.

Amazing Narrator, fun story

Nice story line. Has a very old school, detective novel feel. Best performance by any narrator I’ve ever heard.

Another Winner from Baldacci

I've yet to listen to a bad Baldacci book - and I've listened to them all and preorder the next so that I have it immediately upon release. So that's my bias - and if you don't feel that way about his previous books, you probably won't be hooked suddenly by this one.

This is a really interesting story - not a cookie-cutter plot that we see in so many authors' works these days. The plot is genuine, and it's set in a different time period, which invites rich detail of scenes and characters. The hero is a very unassuming man who finds himself in the middle of a dispute between two strong-willed men. Suddenly, the hero ( and the listener) is dealing with murder, deception, innuendo, lies, missing documents, long-held secrets, and a cast of characters whose lives intersect around this dispute.

And the story is believable. No superhero stuff. No one escapes without a scratch when ambushed by two perps with a machine gun in an alley. No one escapes a burning care seconds before the gas tank explodes. The action here is more subtle and falls well within the range of believability.

This is a good listen - a story that will hook you in and keep you coming back until you reach the end.
