"The Defenders", one of Philip K. Dick's earlier stories, describes a world where a global war between two continents has devastated the suface of the earth. Mankind has been forced to live underground where they continue to fight the war using robot "leadys" who are immune to radiation. Then a startling discovery is made about the robots which changes the entire future of mankind.

We suspect that it is this distinctly individual approach which has made him one of the most admired and widely read of science fiction writers of the past few years.

What is a Wub? A 400-pound slovenly, fat, ungainly, drooling animal that looks like a cross between a walrus and an enormous hog? Well, yes that is pretty much what he looks like and for 50 cents, a good bargain no matter how he tastes. The hungry spaceship crew expect to find out. An army doctor on Earth is puzzled by a soldier who returns from asteroid Y-3 claiming he's a plant. As more men and women on the asteroid claim they're plants, the doctor decides to travel to the asteroid to solve the enigma. During his investigation, he discovers the soldiers believe they have been turned into plants by natives in the asteroid's woods called Pipers. The doctor goes into the woods in search of the Pipers and discovers a strange young woman.

In the distant future, Earth is at war with the planet Mars. Three saboteurs from Earth cause a major Martian city to disappear. They board the last spaceship bound for the planet Earth, and set up a conversation with a stranger…

Time Pawn first appeared in Thrilling Wonder Stories in June ,1954. Under pressure from his publishers, Dick expanded the story into a full length novel - Doctor Futurity. The original is an excellent story but most critics agree that the expanded version was not a success.

"The Defenders" is a 1953 science fiction short story by American author Philip K. Dick and the basis for Dick's 1964 novel The Penultimate Truth. It is one of several of his short stories to be expanded into a novel. The short story was first published in the January 1953 issue of Galaxy Science Fiction.

Philip Kindred Dick (December 16, 1928-March 2, 1982) was an American author who wrote 44 novels and about 121 short stories, most of which appeared in science fiction magazines during his lifetime. His fiction explored varied philosophical and social questions such as the nature of reality, perception, and identity, and commonly featured characters struggling against alternate realities, illusory environments, monopolistic corporations, authoritarian governments, and altered states of consciousness. This recording is from a speech Dick gave in France in 1977.
