H. G. Wells, best known for his science fiction novels, wrote many short stories which had the same engaging qualities as his major works. The Invisible Man is a science fiction novel by H. G. Wells. Originally serialized in Pearson's Weekly in 1897, it was published as a novel the same year. The Invisible Man of the title is Griffin, a scientist who has devoted himself to research into optics and invents a way to change a body's refractive index to that of air so that it neither absorbs nor reflects light and thus becomes invisible. He successfully carries out this procedure on himself, but fails in his attempt to reverse it. An enthusiast of random and irresponsible violence, Griffin has become an iconic character in horror fiction.

HG Wells was an incredibly prolific writer who contributed short stories in a variety of genres, including science fiction, dystopian fiction, and gothic horror. Originally published in 1897, Thirty Strange Stories contains tales like "The Triumphs of a Taxidermist", "Pollock and the Porroh Man", "The Story of the Late Mr. Elvesham", and "The Stolen Bacillus". "The Red Room" is the horrifying story of a man trapped in a haunted room, but it is never made clear what it is that haunts the room.

"The Star" is an 1897 apocalyptic short story by H.G. Wells. In January (about 1900, presumably), the people of Earth awaken to the notion that a strange luminous object has erupted, into the Solar System, after disturbing the normal orbit of the planet Neptune. Indeed, such object is a luminous celestial body, whose luminosity is distinguishable on the sky about the constellation of Leo.
