A testament to the way of solitude and simplicity, the 21 precepts of the Dokkōdō, also known as The Way of Walking Alone, is one of Musashi's principal legacies. Inspired by his life of combat and the bushido code, Miyamoto Musashi wrote the Dokkōdō in Japan in 1645, to pass on his wisdom and philosophy of life before he died. I have been many years training in the way of strategy, called Ni Ten Ichi Ryu, and now, I think I will explain it for the first time. I am a warrior of Harima province, Shinmen Musashi No Kami Fujiwara No Geshin, age 60 years. With the virtue of strategy, I practice many arts and abilities - all things with no teacher.

Miyamoto Musashi was a Japanese swordsman and ronin (masterless samurai). Musashi died in 1645 of what was most likely thoracic cancer. He remained undefeated, having fought 61 duels. His work "The Book of Five Rings" is a treatise on his unique style of swordsmanship. Musashi also practiced other arts such as painting, poetry, and carpentry, and believed to be profoundly releated at the level of mastery.
