Editorial review

By Seth Hartman, Audible Editor

THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA IS A CULTURAL TOUCHSTONE FOR THE AGES

When I think of The Chronicles of Narnia, I am transported to my childhood bedroom at the impossibly late hour of 9:30 PM. My dad is squinting at his yellowed 1976 edition of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, dust kicking up into the air with each turn of the page. As he speaks of fauns, stone tablets, and Turkish Delight, my little brain is working on overdrive to make sense of it all.

All seven books in the series have vastly different storylines, main characters, points of view, and in the case of the audio version, a different narrator for each title. For most Narnia fans, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is the first book they experience, and it's also the best known book in the series. In later editions of the series (including this one), The Magician’s Nephew is considered to be the first book since it takes place much earlier in the canon, starring a young Professor Digory Kirke as he discovers Narnia. I started this series with Wardrobe, however. The story of siblings Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy stumbling upon a magical land and taking on the evil White Witch is nothing short of a timeless classic. With the mighty lion Aslan and the kind faun Mr. Tumnus on their side, these four children are tested and forced to mature quickly in order to rise to the challenge.

While it certainly transports the reader into a highly conceptual fantasy world, the secret sauce to this series is the stellar character writing. Put simply, each of the four children represents one major character archetype: Peter is brave and headstrong, Susan is wise and resourceful, Edmund is agreeable and easily manipulated, and Lucy is kind and loyal. As a kid, I found myself admiring Lucy’s grit and determination in difficult situations. These character outlines may be basic, but author C.S. Lewis uses them to great effect, weaving complex character dynamics while keeping it simple enough for anyone to follow along. While the four children do not appear in all seven books, these sorts of character tropes live on with each trip to this magical and faraway land.

Excellent books, narrators, and price

To get all seven books of the chronicles of Narnia for one credit is too good to pass up! Lewis is was an excellent writer and storyteller that seems to perfectly mingle exciting adventures with deep spiritual truth. These books are all engaging enough to keep the youngest children interested, and yet have enough underlying messages to keep the oldest adults thinking. The only “downside” is that the narrators are all different, so there is a little bit of difference pronunciation of certain words, or occasionally a slightly different voice for a certain character, but this is almost negligible because there are different main characters for most of the books, and the male narrators are very similar. Prince Caspian was the only outlier, as it was narrated by a female. Though she did a great job, in my opinion it would have been wiser to keep the narrators all consistently male for continuity. I would highly recommend this collection.

7 books by different 7 narrators

After each book it takes a little time to adjust to a new narrator but in my opinion, they all did an amazing job. It's quite amazing to get the whole chronicles for one credit.

Great to be back

One of the first magical series I read as a child, and again in high school. It had been way too long and was pleased to find this complete addition of the Chronicles of Narnia.

Each narrator did a great job with their story and tried hard to keep a similar feel/attitude of repeat characters, like Lucy for example, when the character appeared in a different story.

I'm happy to have found this complete version and highly recommend it, especially if you are looking to revisit old friends or share something with your family.

Great stories and excellent narrators

This was my first time listening to the Narnia series. I don't know why I waited so long! This set is fantastic, not just for the stories but also for the excellent narrators. They all did a excellent job with the individual characters. I highly recommend this.

Great Read!

The Chronicles of Narnia are so much more than children's stories. They present a popular approach and enjoyable overview of Christianity. I would like to work through the set with a book club picking out and considering the stories theologically.

This Series is a Treasure

The Chronicles of Narnia is a story shared by several generations of our family. We created so many precious memories of listening together. Typically, I did all the reading aloud which made me hoarse. It is so much easier to listen with others, instead of, reading aloud.
The character principles taught in this allegory collection gently explains the profits of good character and the downfall of evil doers. Also, the restoration of forgiveness gives hope to those who repent from their wicked ways.

A wonderful rendition

The lineup of fabulous actors has produced a series of thoughtful, funny, stirring performances, reading some of the best books ever written. They give life to favorite characters and beloved scenes. I shall never forget Patrick Stewart voicing a talking mouse, a yowling cat, and Aslan at the end of the world. (If you're reading the Narnia books for the first time, do listen in publication order instead.). This audiobook took me back to Narnia, and will again and again.
