Before the high point of enslaved people narratives, African-American literature was dominated by autobiographical spiritual narratives. A l'encontre de la représentation scénique où les personnages sont présents et visibles, la réalisation de cette pièce sous une forme uniquement sonore lui apporte une dimension nouvelle, qui correspond mieux au sens même des personnages décrits par l'auteur comme "morts" ou "absents". La notion d'absence ne pouvait pas être mieux représentée que par la voix des acteurs. Jean-Paul Sartre aimait ce raisonnement.
