About this listen

In the sequel to Clockwork Boys, Slate, Brenner, Caliban and Learned Edmund have arrived in Anuket City, the source of the mysterious Clockwork Boys. They even managed to build some trust in each other's skills. That trust is built on quicksand as the risks continue to escalate. But the secrets they're keeping could well destroy them, before the city even gets the chance...

Old foes and consequences of past decisions lurk in the shadows. Every team member's skills are required to succeed - even more so if they hope to survive.

The Wonder Engine never lets us forget our funny, broken group even as the action propels our heroes to new highs and lows. It shows that making the most of the rest of your life can be rewarding - no matter how many mechanical abominations you need to destroy to get there.

if Terry Pratchett wrote wages of fear

The desperate heist story is a classic for a reason. Mismatched protagonists thrown together on a mission of likely death, learning to work together or betray each other... it's a great story and it's still great here, where a big heaping dollop of humor makes it just so much fun!

Nearly as good as the first

Fabulous, absolutely fabulous narrator.

The story wrap up is also fairly good with 2 problems. Too much filler, too much internal dialog. And every stupid person ‘pinches the bridge of their damn noses’ in frustration, anger, fear, sadness, etc. The nose bridge pinching happens 2-3 DOZEN times. It’s both waaayyy too often and something I’ve never seen anyone do in real life. Including me!

Very well thought out duology. Was a joy to read.

I really cared about the characters in what I would consider a book that is more on the short side. Great writing, great story and just a fun read. Don't hesitate to pick it up.

Just gets better

The character development is incredibly well done. The story line is not predictably but leaves you wondering what they will all get up to next. Imperfect characters with horrible problems make for good story telling

Rich world building and great characters

Great sequel to the clockwork boys.
Characters are funny, flawed and I wish there were more books with them in it and in this well developed world. It filled in blanks in the history from Swordheart (my favourite from this world)

witty writing and great performance

I have come to enjoy King fisher's witty writing and complex characters. Khristine Hver has become one of my favorite voice actors as she has a great range and really brings characters to life. The Paladin series is great listen.

Good listen

The story was a bit hard to get through in the beginning but it's definitely worth listening to both book 1 and 2. I really enjoyed the banter between the characters. My favorites were the knolls such funny little creatures. I really enjoy this authors books and I do recommend listen to them.

great story

the performance is great as is the general plot. there is a love story the runs throughout that overstayed it's welcome at times and dragged down the pacing. worth reading for sure, but be aware that 2 of the main characters are incredibly horny for each other

Continued Entertainment

I really enjoyed the plot to this novel, though there were a few sections that were a bit far into the romance side for me.

That said, this continues to a great book 2 with some well woven plot mechanics and a lot of sarcasm.

Also - nolls are great characters.

Fantastic continuation of The Clockwork Boys

Just like its predecessor, The Clockwork Boys, The Wonder Engine is a delightful story; and I continue to love the narrator's gnoll voices
