Publisher's summary

A laugh-out-loud, slice-of-life martial-arts fantasy about...farming????

Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator. A man powerful enough to defy the heavens. A master of martial arts. A lord of spiritual power. Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I’m stuck in his body.

Arrogant Masters? Heavenly Tribulations? All that violence and bloodshed? Yeah, no thanks. I’m getting out of here.

Farm life sounds pretty great. Tilling a field by hand is fun when you’ve got the strength of ten men—though maybe I shouldn’t have fed those Spirit Herbs to my pet rooster. I’m not used to seeing a chicken move with such grace...but Qi makes everything kind of wonky, so it’s probably fine.

Instead of a lifetime of battle, my biggest concerns are building a house, the size of my harvest, and the way the girl from the nearby village glares at me when I tease her.

A slow, simple, fulfilling life in a place where nothing exciting or out of the ordinary ever happens...right?

The first volume of the blockbuster progression-fantasy series—with more than 16 million views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

Featured Article: Best of the Year—The 12 Best Fantasy Listens of 2022

Between film, television, literature, and audio—2022 could easily be proclaimed the Year of the Fantasy, much to the delight of fans among us. But when it came to picking the best of the best, the glut of fantastic content also significantly increased the CR (challenge rating). This year’s winner edged ahead of the rest thanks to its atmospheric, suck-you-in (pun intended) audio experience, but every performance on this list transported us.

An uplifting Slice of life Xianxia Story

This title has been one of the highest rated stories on Royal Road for a reason. Here are but a number of the reasons to listen. A delightful twist on the Xianxia tropes. A relatable and refreshing mc who just wants a tranquil life. A large supporting cast that manages to stick to your heart in their own right. Masterful pacing that moves the story without being rushed or bogged down. Enough mystery to keep you wondering what's coming next. All these and more are the myriad reasons to enjoy Beware of Chicken.

Can't forget Travis Baldree's usual fantastic performance either.

Challenge the power of Heaven! NOPE! I'm out

Great xianxia cultivation novel with a unique take on the genre. The MC recognizes the world he's been reborn into and decides he wants nothing to do with the cultivator BS so he goes off to be a farmer. Light & heart warming story. I HIGHLY recommend and can't wait for more.

beware of chicken an interesting take on xianxis

I love this book
it's a light hearted take on the isekia, xianxis genera of storytelling.
after being reincarnated. the main character decided he didn't want to become another powerful cultivator and leaves to go be a farmer.
hijinks and romance ensues as the main character finds a home and friends among unlikely sources.
a solid 9/10 story dont let my 4 star ranking fool you I only give 5 star to truly life changing books

Excellent take on Xianxia/Isekai

I have followed this story since it was First published on RR. The Author has done a fantastic job of storytelling, and really brings the characters to life. The Audiobook version is actually incredibly well read, and kept me on the edge of my seat, laughing frequently at the humorous descriptions of great Fa Ram and the cast of characters that seem to be straight out of the Zodiac. Overall, I'd highly recommend listening to this audiobook- you won't be disappointed!

I loved it!

As always Travis baldree does a great job. But I just had to write a review because of how much I enjoyed this book. I like xianxia novels and this book does a great job poking fun at the genre in a fun way. I was expecting it to be funny and it is but what really surprised me was how a character or situation could go from comic to dramatic and the change felt natural. I could go on and on about this book, but it all comes down to this. I loved this book, it made me smile, and I can’t wait for the next one.
