Publisher's summary

Bryony and her sisters have come down in the world. Their merchant father died trying to reclaim his fortune and left them to eke out a living in a village far from their home in the city. But when Bryony is caught in a snowstorm and takes refuge in an abandoned manor, she stumbles into a house full of dark enchantments. Is the Beast that lives there her captor or a fellow prisoner? Is the house her enemy or her ally? And why are roses blooming out of season in the courtyard? Armed only with gardening shears and her wits, Bryony must untangle the secrets of the house before she - or the Beast - are swallowed by them.

A delightful take on a classic fable

I enjoyed this take on classic fable. I enjoyed the gardening, the mystery, poor Fumblefoot.
the slow budding of the relationship between the Gardener and the Beast. It's sweet.

My Favorite Beauty & Beast Version

We discovered Ursula Vernon when Digger won the Hugo for Best Graphic Story in 2012, and have been buying her work in multiple formats since then. The quirky humor that runs through all her work - even the horror novels - often makes me laugh out loud. Bryony & Roses is one of my comfort listens; I'll often fire it up while deciding what to listen to next, like a short, funny palate cleanser.

Love Kingfisher

I will pick up anything by T. Kingfisher, and I love a Beauty and the Beast retelling. This beauty is especially awesome because she is a tough gardener. I would recommend this book.

Numinous and engrossing.

I've been following the author since she was an artist on Lothlorien. She has never disappointed

A fun take on a fairy tale

I had a few issues with the story early on, but they were 100% resolved when her sister got a moment to tell her what an idiot she was being. In the end I really enjoyed it. My only issue is with the performance, the narrator has put on a weird super posh British accent that doesn’t align with anywhere I’ve been in the UK. It felt contrived and I found that distracting.

I absolutely loved this. and I loved the narrators voice so much. T. Kingfisher has yet to disappoint me and I have so many more books of hers to read which is exciting.

Delightful fairy tale retelling!

This was a wonderful spin on “Beauty and the Beast”, targeted to YA or adult audiences, not the sanitized Disney version! (Not that there was sex, just more danger and evil.) I thoroughly enjoyed every minute! A wonderful protagonist, who is gritty and resourceful. The Beast was perfect: shy, gruff, humble, mysterious. Just a great story all around! And great narration!

Beauty and the Beast?

It was fine. A little hard to follow toward the end. Enjoyable and not super long

Delightful and moving

I loved this retelling of the Beauty and the Beast story in print, and it's even more delightful as an audiobook. Justine Eyre's performance enhances the text nicely.

Gardeners will understand why the scene in which (no spoilers here) they approach her garden's border brought tears to my eyes, in a good way.

More of T. Kingfisher's work as audiobooks, please!

Lively and unique retelling

Bryony is not your typical beauty, as most retellings would write. She is sharp and plain, and she cares more for vegetable and herb gardening than roses.

The story is uniquely done, and the journey to the ending is not typical either.

As usual, Justine Eyre does magnificent narration.
