For all that Jason knows, life is amazing. But he's about to learn that all his new power, wealth, and influence comes at a price.
Riding high on success, he and his team are looking to the future, preparing themselves for the challenges to come. Nothing, however, could have prepared him for the lessons his enemies have to teach. When magic is involved, the stakes can be even greater than life and death.
While Jason’s personal enemies make plans, the greater foes plaguing his new home have been pushed to the brink. With one powerful card left to play, they are on a collision course with Jason and his team. With no one to help and more than their lives on the line, Jason and his companions must fight with more monsters than ever in the race to grow stronger. With an invincible enemy already anticipating them, they will learn that sometimes winning the battle is more important than surviving it.

Featured Article: The top 100 series of all time
The feeling of discovering that your favorite new listen is actually the start of a series is euphoric. That you can immediately hit play and re-enter a beloved new world, or love story, or era from history is a gift to the devoted listener. But how to pick just 100 of these unique and immersive listening journeys? We defined a series as having a minimum of three books, and—after some debate—we decided the titles had to be anchored in fiction. From YA to horror to historical fiction, from fresh voices to seminal tales, hours of discovery await.

THE GOOD:
*Unlike a number of books I've slogged through lately, the author REALLY makes me care about the characters and goes out of his way to provide you with their deep thoughts and motivations, and for me that's a real incentive to keep going. Nobody likes robotic characters that just do things for whatever trivial reason, and this is probably the biggest reason I'll keep buying this series as new additions arise.
*I've seen complaints about the timeframe progressing too quickly at times, but I have to say that I was rather pleased with the amount of time the author saved by moving things along without getting too mired in ultimately unimportant plot points. The momentum worked for me.
*Diverting Jason-esque shenanigans (now with more leeches!)
*Heath Miller is a treasure. His ability to differentiate different characters with subtlety and skill is a true pleasure to listen to.
THE NOT-SO-GOOD:
*Many people have complained about the unending skill descriptions, and I'm inclined to agree that it's too much and really detracts from the action. I actually managed to fall asleep TWICE when what should have been an intense battle devolved into too much scurrying around from the characters, interspersed by unimportant skill explanations that wouldn't die. If you've gone through the other stories, do yourself a favor and tap that skip button, it'll really help the pacing. I imagine in eBook form it's a non-issue, but for the audiobook version not so much.
*Somehow, the battles just didn't have the same bite this time around. The enemies SHOULD be fearsome, but they're ultimately convenient punching bags and it kinda got old by the end.
*Really, MORE cliffhanging!? This is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, and it's more blatant in this novel than in the previous books (which is saying something). At least give the listener a tiny bit of satisfaction, will ya? Such a swift amputation of an ending really cheapens the entire experience in my book. The added fluff on the end of this one was no substitute for a real ending.
Overall, I don't regret my choice to grab this next audiobook in the series (the joy of the character interactions and growth along with stellar narration is good stuff), but I'm looking forward to some improvements in what follows or else I'll seriously consider spending my credits elsewhere.
Overall decent (spoiler-free review)
