Publisher's summary

A new world. A thousand threats. Welcome to The Continent.

Felix's life on Earth had become a series of dead-end jobs, ruined relationships, and rotating apartments smaller than most postage stamps. By all accounts, even his own, he was a coward. Too afraid to move forward, to take risks. Yet when given the chance to choose between risking his life or walking away from a deadly encounter, he didn't hesitate.

Moments before his untimely demise, Felix was snatched from earth and thrust into a magical world known only as "The Continent". Empowered by the "System", he learns that he can strengthen himself through combat and dedication. To survive, he'll have to push himself beyond his limits, or else fall to the monsters all around him.

Levels, stats, and magic. Death is the start of a terrible fate, but if he lives...no one knows what he will become.

an engaging story

I'll start with positives, which will be easy. the story was engaging. Lovers of Isekai will find this spectacular. the main character is classically heroic: he wants to do good, and doesn't compromise his morality when it's convenient. This isn't to say he's never tempted. he simply chooses to be good. that, to me, is a breath of fresh air in a landscape of every new story being about antiheroes.
The ending is solid enough that you could put down the series here and feel satisfied, but has just enough of an opening that you will be interested in seeing what the sequel has to offer.
The narrator was fantastic! His performance brought the characters to life and captured the feeling of being in a game setting.
my one gripe:
Number one, I don't need a full rundown of the character sheet every few minutes. this probably works better in print where you can easily just skim the info and move on, but if you're wanting to show an incremental improvement, spending a full 3 minutes recording every skill, they're rarity, and their level is unnecessary and mildly annoying.

good story, very repetitive skill lists

I'm currently on book four of the series and the skill list are finally shorter it's probably not bad in a written book where you can skim over the whole list but it draws out as bad as one of my seventh grade essays with mandatory word counts. The story overall is good with good action and a normal amount of drawing from other fantasy Red cloaks versus white cloaks etc... The only thing that feels very forced is every meaningful relationship in the series is LGBTQ and is mentioned over and over and over again I can't count how many times I'm reminded of the weapon makers wife and it just feels pushed like the author is trying to either make a point of it or be put in a different class of books or win an award for being an ally or something. if that's your thing then fine but it seems to be a driving point of the authors and it hasn't changed four books in. also the author may possibly have a fetish for shapely dwarves 😁

Captivating!

A great read with a unique power set. The MC doesn't dawdle, keeps the action up, and the ongoing story keeps you interested to see what will happen next

Pretty awesome.

Had a fairly good time listening to this. There were only a few things that I had issues with but they were all small and pretty easy to look past. I'll definitely be buying the next book.

This book ruined me!

From start to finish I was enthralled ! Through a series of being frustrated, agrovated, and in or gated ! Describes my whole experience of this book. I still am ready to fight the writer on site based off what I wanted to happen vs the reality of how the book played out! And heads up the writer did nothing wrong, however you just get so wrapped up in the characters and the storyline and the world building that you just hope. Shoutout to the guy narrating the book cause he’s phenomenal. To the writer ! U blew new away man , The level of detail and description and the cliffhangers u leave at the end of chapter ! Hurry up with the next book ! Please and thank you

Really well written

I picked this up with no expectations, just cam across it randomly while looking for a new series. I very much enjoyed the story and am eagerly awaiting book two!

It has its moments

Could have used a lot more character developement and less on the skill side. Travis does an amazing job as always, he is by far my favorite narrator. overall i enjoyed it.

Excellent Listen

Friggin great. Some of the most compelling and well narrated sequences I’ve listened to in the last few years.
