About this listen

From the bestselling author of My Lovely Wife comes a reckless, delicious thriller that gives a whole new meaning to the dangers of modern dating.

Wes and Ivy are madly in love. They've never felt anything like it. It's the type of romance people write stories about.

But what kind of story?

When it's good, it's great. Flowers. Grand gestures. Deep meaningful conversations where the whole world disappears.

When it's bad, it's really bad. Vengeful fights. Damaged property. Arrest warrants.

But their vicious cycle of catastrophic breakups and head-over-heels reconciliations needs to end fast. Because suddenly, Wes and Ivy have a common enemy—and she's a detective.

There's something Wes and Ivy never talk about—in good times or bad. The night of their worst breakup, when one of them took things too far, and someone ended up dead.

If they can stick together, they can survive anything—even the tightening net of a police investigation.

Because one more breakup might just be their last…

Editorial Review

Samantha Downing has wowed me again
The bestselling author of My Lovely Wife (and several other amazingly twisty domestic thrillers) can always be trusted to take you on a rollercoaster ride with each of her mind-bending stories. In her newest work—narrated by Karissa Vacker, whose vocal snark is on point—we meet Wes and Ivy, a pair who has been on-and-off for the 10 years since they met. Their friends may call them toxic, but they know what they have is real and (probably) made to last—as long as they can keep their dark history from coming back to bite them. The story unfolds through a series of overlapping flashbacks, perspectives, and subplots, but as complex as the story gets, Downing never lets the thread drop, making for an exceptionally satisfying conclusion. Don't miss this one! —Katie O., Audible Editor

Least favorite of her books

She is one of my favorite writers, but this one just kind of fell flat

Slow burn ❤️‍🔥🔥👩‍❤️‍👨💔☣️

I admit the ending I didn't see coming....but it took forever to get there.....quite slow, redundant, and a lot was going on at the same time.
However it eventually all fell into place and I did enjoy it.
I would not wish for Wes and Ivy's relationship...they really are made for each other.

Could’ve ended better

I really enjoyed this book. I wish it had a better ending. I feel like the ending just didn’t make any sense to me

I liked it a lot.

I enjoyed reading about these twisted lovers. I felt like they needed to pay for their crimes, but at the same time I was rooting for them to live happily ever after too or at least as happy as two twisted people can.

Rethink Relationships

This was a really good thriller that puts modern day relationships on their head and makes you question everything you think you know about love. Every single character was completely unlikable to the point that I was wondering if this was a modern retelling of Wuthering Heights. Do not go into this book hoping to cheer for anyone.

Perfect title

Left me a little wondering but overall good. Not really a thriller but a slow burn romantic mystery.

Not My Favorite - 2.5 ☆'s

Looks like I am in the minority here, but I didn't love this book. I have read and loved all of this authors other books and preorder automatically, but this one just didn't work for me. Pretty slow start and middle - the only suspenseful part was maybe the last hour or two and even thats a stretch. I normally "read" a book in two days - 3 max - this took me 8 days to get through- just wasn't interested enough to come back to it. Plot is a bit unbelievable and just wasn't crazy about the ending either.

Karissa Vacker'd performance, as always, was AMAZING and was the only reason I didn't jump ship on this one. If you haven't read this author yet - start with My Lovely Wife!

Okay but save your credit

I liked this book just enough to finish it, but I wanted to stop a few times, especially at the beginning and middle. It could’ve been a 3-4 hr novella. The best part of the book is the conclusion (the last 2.5 hours when things are actually happening.) It’s way too slow to get there, though. The plot is suspenseful but also kind of absurd. Some characters seem randomly thrown into the plot. I wish I hadn’t spent a credit on this. I’m more of a fan of mystery domestic thrillers than suspenseful crime thrillers. This is the latter and I can’t say I recommend this book.
