About this listen

From the internationally best-selling author of My Lovely Wife and He Started It comes a twisted, entertaining novella about a dog walker swept into a criminal investigation when her client winds up dead.

Shelby works as a dog walker in northern California, and she’s just finished up her bi-weekly trip to the park with a husky named Pluto. When she brings him back to his house, she finds his owner - Todd Burke, a well-known local businessman and founder of an organic supplements company - lying on the bathroom floor, dead. A detective arrives on the scene. As she interviews Shelby, the body is inspected by a medical examiner, and more cops search Todd’s home, it becomes clear that the victim’s life was less picture-perfect than his clean-cut persona might lead you to believe.

Dear Listener,

What inspired me to write this story?
" Sleeping Dogs Lie was inspired by my brother, who owns a dog walking/sitting company. He used to tell me I should write about a dog walker, so I finally did! Although I currently live in New Orleans, he lives in Marin County, California, the same area where the story takes place. Marin is also where I grew up. Back then it was a sleepy little suburb, but the Silicon Valley explosion changed all that! Now when I visit, it’s filled with tech employees, organic restaurants, and people who are a lot like the characters of Todd and Regina Burke. All the places in the story are real—the shopping center, the coffee shop locations, the dog park, and even the subdivision of Bel Marin Keys. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed writing it!" – Samantha Downing, creator of Sleeping Dogs Lie

Easy to listen to, entertaining

I appreciate the author who knows how to tell a story in an interesting way without too much detail that to me, bogs down the story. This author hit the mark there; we are told enough but not in the typical excruciating detail.

A Doggone Twist!

Good story! This was my first short story so wasn’t sure what to expect but I loved it. Helped me fill in some down time between a book club reading.

I didn’t know where the story was headed but as the pieces started falling into place, I got a de ja vue feeling that reminded me of “The 6th Sense”.

Highly recommend it!
