Publisher's summary

Christina Lauren, the instant New York Times bestselling and “reigning romance queens” (PopSugar), returns with a delicious new romance between the buttoned-up heir of a grocery chain and his free-spirited artist ex as they fake their relationship in order to receive a massive inheritance.

Anna Green thought she was marrying Liam “West” Weston for access to subsidized family housing while at UCLA. She also thought she’d signed divorce papers when the graduation caps were tossed, and they both went on their merry ways.

Three years later, Anna is a starving artist living paycheck to paycheck while West is a Stanford professor. He may be one of four heirs to the Weston Foods conglomerate, but he has little interest in working for the heartless corporation his family built from the ground up. He is interested, however, in his one-hundred-million-dollar inheritance. There’s just one catch.

Due to an antiquated clause in his grandfather’s will, Liam won’t see a penny until he’s been happily married for five years. Just when Liam thinks he’s in the home stretch, pressure mounts from his family to see this mysterious spouse, and he has no choice but to turn to the one person he’s afraid to introduce to his one-percenter parents—his unpolished, not-so-ex-wife.

But in the presence of his family, Liam’s fears quickly shift from whether the feisty, foul-mouthed, paint-splattered Anna can play the part to whether the toxic world of wealth will corrupt someone as pure of heart as his surprisingly grounded and loyal wife. Liam will have to ask himself if the price tag on his flimsy cover story is worth losing true love that sprouted from a lie.

Editorial Review

Take me to paradise
I’ve been on a rom-com kick this year (every year?), but no matter what my listening mood, Christina Lauren is always an auto-download for me. This time, the best friend writing duo takes us to a private resort in Indonesia, where the setting serves as a luxurious backdrop to a fake-relationship plot, layered with complex family dynamics, corporate greed, and artistic ambitions. The love story is, of course, swoon-worthy, but I really appreciated our heroine Anna’s journey to trusting both her own voice and talents. Patti Murin and Jon Root perform their third CLo collaboration, giving voice to Anna and Liam in a dual POV, and I’m already hoping the whole gang reunites on a sequel featuring some of the other characters. I recently got to interview the authors, and their passion reinforced both my love of them and of the genre. There is something so special about HEAs and the authors that get us there. — Katie O., Audible Editor

Karma’s a beach 🏖️

I love when the villain gets a taste of their own medicine. Such a fun book. I love Anna and the outlook her dad instilled in her.

Disappointing

I had seen this book as the featured selection on Audible for a long time, so I finally broke down and bought it. I almost returned it after reading about 20 percent, but I stuck with it. It just seemed really silly and confusing to me. As the relationship between Liam and Anna begin to develop, it got more interesting. The Epilogue was the best part of the book. Warning: the F, MF and GD words punctuate the prose with abandon, and, I felt, gratuitously--more than any book I have read in a long time. I have gotten immune to judicious profanity, This seems excessive and unnecessary as well as a little false coming from Anna. Not a favorite.

Summer read

Beginning I was skeptical as I love Christina Lauren and it was a bit slower than their previous books. But the last half really picked up and it was a cute summer read.

Just what I needed

Great Rom Com with a few life lessons thrown in. Which is more important Money or Love, Money or Respect, Business over Family? You get a lot with the MC Anna is quirky, witty and definitely not scared to speak her mind, Liam is the heir to a grocery store chain and more under the radar and proper, he is only trying to get his inheritance so that he can do good with it and for his family, and trying to stay away from the family business that his father is trying to force him in. It is a slow burn sort of, a marriage of convenience, fake dating, opposites attract story and just what I needed.
