Publisher's summary

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Book Lovers and Beach Read comes a sparkling novel that will leave you with the warm, hazy afterglow usually reserved for the best vacations.

Two best friends. Ten summer trips. One last chance to fall in love.

Poppy and Alex. Alex and Poppy. They have nothing in common. She’s a wild child; he wears khakis. She has insatiable wanderlust; he prefers to stay home with a book. And somehow, ever since a fateful car share home from college many years ago, they are the very best of friends. For most of the year they live far apart—she’s in New York City, and he’s in their small hometown—but every summer, for a decade, they have taken one glorious week of vacation together.

Until two years ago, when they ruined everything. They haven't spoken since.

Poppy has everything she should want, but she’s stuck in a rut. When someone asks when she was last truly happy, she knows, without a doubt, it was on that ill-fated, final trip with Alex. And so, she decides to convince her best friend to take one more vacation together—lay everything on the table, make it all right. Miraculously, he agrees.

Now she has a week to fix everything. If only she can get around the one big truth that has always stood quietly in the middle of their seemingly perfect relationship. What could possibly go wrong?

Critic reviews

“What Henry is especially skilled at is writing dialogue. The banter between Poppy and Alex is so natural, quick and witty that it would make Shonda Rhimes do a slow clap.” (The Associated Press)

“The strength of People We Meet on Vacation [is] the clever observations, the dialogue (which is laugh-out-loud funny) and, most particularly, the characters. Funny and fumbling and lovable, they’re most decidedly worth the trip." (The Wall Street Journal)

“Henry’s biggest strength is in the sparkling, often laugh-out-loud-funny dialogue, particularly the banter-filled conversations between Poppy and Alex. The end result is a story that pays homage to classic romantic comedies while having a point of view all its own. A warm and winning When Harry Met Sally update that hits all the perfect notes.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Emotional thrill ride

First off, I am a 27 year old man, I work at a hot ass foundry melting down metal all day for a living surrounded by a bunch of hardened felon's cussin and razzin each other all day. Even talkin about the wrong movie will land you at the business end of ceaseless gay jokes until the end of time. Of course i pay this no mind and seen this book had good reviews and had been wanting to switch up the genre rut Ive been in so i gave it a shot. I found myself keeping my shaded safety glasses on all day at work to hide my tears while i listened. Its sappy and sweet and lovey dovey but the character development is superb, the writing is engaging, the story is believable even if maybe a little far fetched with how dense 2 people would have to be to ignore their own and each others feelings for that amount of time but there are reasons and explanations given that are suitable for my needs (which are this book needing to be just realistic enough for me to get lost in it and enjoy the pure love the characters develope for each other) I lovvved it. Already got her previous book an Im loving that even more than this. So glad i found it. LOVVEE💗

Cute and funny!

This book was delightful! Like any good romantic comedy, you laugh out loud, smile and grow increasingly annoyed at the amount of time the main characters don’t just get together already! But you still find yourself intrigued and cheering for them!

Cute, fun read!

I didn’t really like her book beach read, but this one is so much better. Fun, light read with engaging characters.

Not my cup of tea

This book just dragged on! I usually don't write bad reviews but this story just didn't do it for me. I was going to return it halfway through but audible did not let me return. I guess too many books I did not care for and returned?!? So, I finish it, but really didn't care for the whole back and forth for no good reason! Ugh.

Great for cleaning days

Fun story for days when you need easy listening. I wasn't prepared for the sex scenes so I dropped it a star. they are excessive, just unexpected when they popped up.

A good background Book

Cute and fuzzy and the male protagonist is to die for. Great summer read.

Character driven story. Excellent conversations

I picked up this book for 2 reasons. I enjoyed Emily Henry's first book Beach Read a lot, and I love Julia Whelan.

Now for the review. I can see where all the low ratings come from. This is a very character driven book about discovering yourself, discovering things about your friend, exploring, and experiences. All the meanwhile enjoying the build up of a slow burn romance. So if this is not your cup of tea, then maybe its not for you.

I for one enjoy well written Romance books, so I had a feeling after reading Beach Read, I'd like this one just as much. Emily Henry has a way of writing that makes you smile with every witty conversation that Poppy and Alex share. I thought her creative way of re-telling their friendship from the beginning of all those summers ago, was brilliantly executed and engaging. I had read this book in 30min increments as that was the length of my commute to and from work, and I was always eager to dive right back into the story. I'm not one for reading about other & ex-partners being involved in the main couple's story/buildup of their romance (I despise books where Authors do that for drama's sake), but in this story specifically, it made sense and worked due to the fact of WHO Poppy and Alex are character wise. It also wasn't invasive to Poppy and Alex's overall connection and helped explain all the why's and when's. By the end I am left wanting more of Poppy and Alex and as another reviewer mentioned as well, I miss them already!!
Narrator, 5star performance as always by the magnificent Julia Whelan. Story gets a 4.5stars. There was a slight lull somewhere near the middle of the book. Romance heat level I'd say is a 2... and I'll admit.. I wish it was a 4!!! lol. Because Alex and Poppy!!!! Can't wait for Emily Henry's next book and hopefully also narrated by Julia Whelan! Loving this Duo.

liked it

I liked Poppy and Alex better than the characters in Summer read. Their opposites attract chemistry is fun.
