Publisher's summary
A week after my 50th birthday, and just as our family was about to move home, something happened that changed the way I looked at life. I spoke to others about how they rebuilt their shattered worlds after very different personal traumas, emerging stronger than before. I hope our experiences, together with the latest science on resilience, will help guide all those going through tough times. This book says that it's possible not just to survive them but to thrive. To rise.
Renowned as a much-loved and highly respected journalist and broadcaster with 30 years' experience, Sian Williams has studied the impact of acute stress for many years and is also a trained trauma assessor. In Rise, she explores the science of resilience and growth after trauma, offers advice from the experts, and learns from those who have emerged from horrific experiences feeling changed yet stronger, with new perspectives on their lives, their relationships and their work. She also documents her own path through breast cancer, with candid and unflinching honesty.
Her story provides a narrative thread through a book designed to help others deal with all manner of adversity, including physical or mental ill health, loss of a loved one, abuse and post-traumatic stress.

Story
Modern medical technology is allowing us to live longer and fuller lives than ever before. But with changes in the way we understand medicine come changes in the way we understand death. Once a familiar and gentle process, death has come to be something from which we shy away, preferring to fight it desperately than to accept its inevitability. Palliative care has a long tradition in Britain, where Dr. Kathryn Mannix has practiced it for 30 years. In this book, she shares beautifully crafted stories from a lifetime of caring for the dying.

From childhood, Laura James knew she was different. She struggled to cope in a world that often made no sense to her, as though her brain had its own operating system. It wasn't until she reached her 40s that she found out why: Suddenly and surprisingly, she was diagnosed with autism. With a touching and searing honesty, Laura challenges everything we think we know about what it means to be autistic. Married with four children and a successful journalist, Laura examines the ways in which autism has shaped her career, her approach to motherhood, and her closest relationships.

Bryony Gordon has OCD. It's the snake in her brain that has told her ever since she was a teenager that her world is about to come crashing down: that her family might die if she doesn't repeat a phrase five times, or that she might have murdered someone and forgotten about it. It's caused alopecia, bulimia, and drug dependency. And Bryony is sick of it. Keeping silent about her illness has given it a cachet it simply does not deserve, so here she shares her story with trademark wit and dazzling honesty.

Each of these six essays captures a piece of Polley’s life as she remembers it, while at the same time examining the fallibility of memory, the mutability of reality in the mind, and the possibility of experiencing the past anew, as the person she is now but was not then. As Polley writes, the past and present are in a “reciprocal pressure dance.”

Story
Imagine finding a glimmer of good news in a diagnosis of Alzheimer's. And imagine how that would change the outlook of the five million Americans who suffer from Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, not to mention their families, loved ones, and caretakers. A neurologist who's been specializing in dementia and memory loss for more than 20 years, Dr. Gayatri Devi rewrites the story of Alzheimer's by defining it as a spectrum disorder - like autism, Alzheimer's is a disease that affects different people differently.

And in her new book, Jenny expands her message to share recovery stories from parents across the country, showing how each parent fought to find her own child's perfect "remedy of interventions." Along the way, Jenny shares her own journey as an autism advocate and mother, as well as the continuing progress of her son, Evan. Emotional and genuinely practical, Mother Warriors will inspire a generation of parents with hope.

Listen with a wide open mindset.
When what you've been doing isn't working, sometimes it helps to get a new perspective on coping and processing trauma. We don't always realize until after the fact, that we're wasting so much unnecessary energy on coping in our best way, but without the tools we need.
I suggest getting rid of old ideas, opening the mind wide, uncrossing arms, and having a listen on how we can better cope. We can get defensive at first, when we know we could process trauma in a way that isn't ours. That isn't familiar. A short listen here and there is likely to bring you to a healing garden of information on how the brain copes. How our feelings are okay to validate. How we can own our pain, and let others own theirs. There is no shortage of gentle messages in this book. Everyone is sure to come away with an epiphany or two!
I was surprised to hear about how reconstruction differs from person to perhaps, country as mine was not even close to the author's. It was ugly, and horrible, and traumatic however, much different.
Highly recommend this book.
