Publisher's summary

I'm supposed to convince you that listening to this book is worthwhile. I wish I didn't have to. I wish I never had to write it. But brokenness exists.

I go through most days feeling broken and having thoughts of suicide. So, here's my book to you. I didn't write it to make a lot of money, but out of a need to survive, and to hopefully help others who hear it. It is born out of my story of living with a mental illness. I write about things in this book that made life easier, and at times, probably kept me alive. You shouldn't have to wait to tell your story until you have things all figured out - I'm not even close, but I'm sharing mine. I pray what I've learned encourages you to share your experiences with someone too. Here are some things I'd like you to think about as you consider reading this book.

Do you feel like you have to pretend you're not broken and pray that your struggle doesn't get passed on to your kids?

Do you feel overwhelmed with inadequate boundaries and need help knowing where to draw the line with people?

Do you get those check-in sheets every time you go to your therapist and can't make sense out of the scale they're using?

Do you feel lost between faith and sanity, success and failure, hope and helplessness?

If you feel broken, I wrote this for you.

Raw, Real, Heartfelt, Hopeful Resource

Everybody has a story. “Every good story has conflict in it. Some is internal some is external”.(Donald Miller-Blue Like Jazz)
This book gives the reader a glimpse into the life of someone who deals with mental illness on the daily. Joe Reid’s humor and down to earth personality makes this an easy book to get drawn into. The forward from his daughter offers another perspective into how mental illness’s effect isn’t singular. It changes the lives of everyone involved. We’re all a little Broken and could use some help. This book gives helpful tips and reinforces the truth that we are not alone.

Great book made better by the author reading it

To hear the author read through the book really enhanced the overall impact of this book for me. Hearing him read through the chapters, made the personal stories come alive which for me really increased the effect for me.

I would highly recommend giving this book a listen. Even if you feel like you don’t think you struggle with psychological issues, this book will still be tremendously valuable in helping you through tough times - because they do come for all of us…and also to help you interact with more empathy with those who do.

Worth Listening To More Than Once!

Unexpectedly humorous for such a deep topic. LOVE that the author recorded the book himself--it was so much more impactful, and I don't think it would have worked any other way. Even his daughter helps with some of the recording, and that provides an entirely fresh perspective. Both of them have pleasing, articulate voices.
Very unique take on things like the concept of success, social anxiety, or even our common, "How are you" greeting. I was constantly surprised by where he was going with some of his analogies such as the Beatle's song, "A Hard Day's Night" or a simple toolbox. But he always pleasantly delivered with each analogy.
Don't let the title put you off. Don't assume this book is only valuable if you have a mental illness or problem (like, who DOESN"T?!?). I intend to put his "Mental Health Scale" to use immediately when dealing with family members; this would have been a GREAT tool to use back when I taught high school!
I especially liked the "YOU-tilization" challenge at the end of each section--all very thought-provoking and practical. THIS is one of the reasons I will listen to this book more than a few times.
All in all, a WONDERFUL book that is both helpful and entertaining! Well worth the 5 Stars in all three categories!

Life Changing!!!

Broken Like Me gives you three vital tools to help navigate emotional well being and how to communicate with those you love. It has given me insight into various opportunities we have to become more healthy each day of our lives.

The author’s style is very refreshing! Each chapter is easy to read in a 15 minute interval, and they give you a chance to practically put to use what you’ve read and learned.

This is one of a few books, I believe, is worth listening to/reading more than a time or two…I’ve already been through it twice!

Awesome

I had a printed copy of the book that I was trying to find time in my busy life to read. I was glad to find there was an audio version.

Great content. Great use of humor weaved in at just the right moments throughout the book to get certain points across.

The author is actually the one reading the book for the audio version - I listen to a TON of audio books….he should consider reading audio books of others - he has the perfect voice and inflection for audio books.
