Quelques personnes ont eu le temps d'apercevoir le conducteur, un homme, coiffé d'une toque de fourrure et de larges lunettes de pilote, assis sur une banquette recouverte d'une peau de chèvre et à côté duquel gémissait une femme renversée sur le siège, la tête ensanglantée.

La princesse Olga qui se targue devant ses amies de connaître Arsène Lupin qu'elle a connu sous le pseudonyme Jim Barnett, va leur raconter comment, un jour, ce détective l'a fait rentrer en possession d'un bijou brusquement envolé alors qu'elle était seule en conversation avec un soupirant Maxime Dervinol, fils d'un banquier, qui, confus de cette gênante situation, ne savait plus à quel saint se vouer.

Les Imbert ne sont pas des enfants de chœur, leur hôtel particulier est un vrai château et Mme Imbert ne se sépare jamais de la clé du coffre. Cette histoire lui réservera bien des surprises.

Arsène Lupin, qui se fait appeler Guillaume Berlat, est assailli dans un train par un mystérieux voyageur, qui lui vole son argent et ses papiers. Les autorités sont persuadées que cet intrépide voleur est Arsène Lupin. Et voilà donc le vrai Arsène Lupin, aidé par la police, qui part à la recherche du faux Arsène Lupin.
