About this listen

This entirely fictional (and entirely hilarious) immersive audio drama features performances by Kevin Nealon (Zeta Doug), Natasha Lyonne (Narrator), and Amy Goodmurphy (Katie).

Set on a large ranch in rural upstate New York, it’s early days for the eccentric group of people who call themselves The Zeta Family — quite possibly the next big cult phenomenon.

Our protagonist, Katie, is an aspiring reporter who has decided to infiltrate the compound, and her future success as a journalist depends entirely on her ability to win the confidence of Zeta Doug, the likable spiritual leader of the group.

He’s like a cross between Hunter S. Thompson and George R. R. Martin, with a little too much sci-fi in his head and acid in his blood stream. Like all good cult leaders, Doug is elusive and mysterious, and Katie quickly begins to wonder if this cult is truly just a gnarly collection of weirdos hanging out in the woods, or is there something else going on here?

He is perhaps best known for his nine-year stint as a cast member of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, where he created some of the show’s most memorable characters including Subliminal Man and Hans and Franz. Quite notably, it was his reoccurring role as an anchor on Weekend Update that helped make the sketch a show staple. He also earned an Emmy nod as part of the SNL writing team. He received much critical acclaim for his role as Doug Wilson in the Showtime series, Weeds. He currently stars alongside Matt LeBlanc on the CBS-TV comedy series Man With A Plan, and he also hosts the YouTube series Hiking With Kevin. His 2009 Showtime stand up special, Kevin Nealon: Now Hear Me Out! aired to rave reviews, followed three years later by a second standup special for Showtime, Whelmed...But Not Overly. Other televisions credits include guest starring roles on Hot In Cleveland, The League, Soul Man, Drunk History, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. He is also a regular on the talk show circuit. On the big screen, Kevin starred alongside Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston in Just Go with It, and opposite Andy Samberg and Sarah Silverman in Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. Other credits from his extensive film career include Anger Management, Blended, Eight Crazy Nights, The Wedding Singer, Happy Gilmore, You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, Joe Dirt, Walk of Shame, Daddy Day Care, Good Boy, Roxanne, and the cult hit Grandma’s Boy. Kevin continues to tour the country performing stand-up comedy, and he is currently working on his third, yet to be titled, stand-up special. In addition, he authored Yes, You’re Pregnant, But What About Me?—a comical look at the male perspective of pregnancy which is available in bookstores.

Format is great and the story is fun, but...

I love the immersive radio play format and the plot concept was fun. I’m pretty sure the only value added by Natasha Lyonne is that the publisher was able to say that Natasha Lyonne was in the story. Fortunately, that portion is easily avoided with the 30 second “skip ahead” button. All in all, it was worth a listen.

Fun Short Read

The performance was run and exciting. The story was pretty interesting. My first fiction audible read and it was fun that it was "acted out" rather than just read aloud.

Pretty different but interesting

So I gave this a chance because it was shorter and I thought it would be a really interesting listen. While I’m not super impressed with how it ended, the voice actors did a really good job making the story interesting and engaging for anyone who listens. It’s a quick, laughable and an eye rolling story that most people with a dry sense of humor will enjoy.

hated narrator character

the rest of the characters were good the story was well written and acted. the narrator character was the most abrasive and annoying character of the whole story. I dreaded each time I heard her voice I just wish the story would regress she didn't add much besides setting up the additional plot. in the end she gets sober and is less annoying before she runs her mouth more she does not set up the story she just talks about herself and almost ruined a perfectly enjoyable and will done story.
