meh

I finished the book. It was not my favorite, I almost ditched it after not being hooked the first two chapters. I love the narrator though.

Very Meh

Not horrible, but not great, either. The story was slow to get moving. If that time did more to develop the characters it might’ve been ok. Most characters very one-dimensional. Lead character more filled out, but in a technical kind of way. Plot relied on some trite ideas (bad old-school cops). Also story went kind of all over the place. I guess that was supposed to be “twists,” but it left me thinking our lead wasn’t too clever.

Narrator mostly fine although she did mispronounce a couple of words.

Won’t be continuing with series.

Good first book

The opening of this book drew me in completely. The rest of the story with its earlier and now unsolved cases and the large number of characters tended to drag just a bit. The ending was a surprise which helps a lot.

This first in a series book was an easy and fairly quick read/listen. This genre is a favorite of mine and some are really really good. I will have to get the second book to see if this series will rank in that category.

Is her nickname Mom? Or Ma’am? She is 25 years old? So confused

Listening to this on audible I cannot tell if the main character Anna, if her nickname is mom as a mother? Or is it a miss reading of the word ma’am? It’s so weird. First she’s only supposed to be 25 years old. So why does everybody call her mom? And they use first or last names for every character randomly and I can’t follow which character is which. They should just go with one name and be consistent. I really want to like this book but I don’t understand what is happening and why do they call her mom? I need to see the written version clearly.

Made me buy the next book immediately after finish

There are many series that I listen to the first book and then say, "mmm, good book, but I don't think I'm going to continue on". Others, you just want to listen to the next one immediately. This was one of those. I'm not saying it was a five star must read scream from the mountaintops type of story. But at the end of it, I really felt it was a good read and I was satisfied with how the story went and the amount of character development, and I felt as it ended that I wanted more, which in this case is a good thing, not a situation where it was lacking. It was a good length book, not too long, and I liked the lead character, enjoyed her story. When the book was over, I said "I'd like to hear more of her story", so I got the next book. That is, pardon the pun, a credit to the author. I'd recommend the book to anyone looking for a detective/police mystery.

Very well written; with just the right amount of twists and turns to keep me riveted and not wanting to stop listening. I will read future books by this author.

Took me a while to get into, but I enjoyed it

I have to admit I zoned out a bit at the beginning. The story needed a while to grip me. I really doubted whether to give it 3 or 4 stars. It was the interesting villain Shaw that ended up being the reason why I gave it 4 stars. He had a bit of a Hannibal Lector vibe.
