Publisher's summary

An Amazon Charts bestseller.

An unlikely pair teams up to investigate a brutal murder in a haunting thriller that walks the line between reality and impossibility.

When small-town police officers discover the grave of a young boy, they’re quick to pin the crime on a convicted criminal who lives nearby. But when it comes to murder, Officer Susan Marlan never trusts a simple explanation, so she’s just getting started.

Meanwhile, college professor Eric Evans hallucinates a young boy in overalls: a symptom of his schizophrenia - or so he thinks. But when more bodies turn up, Eric has more visions, and they mirror details of the murder case. As the investigation continues, the police stick with their original conclusion, but Susan’s instincts tell her something is off. The higher-ups keep stonewalling her, and the FBI’s closing in.

Desperate for answers, Susan goes rogue and turns to Eric for help. Together they take an unorthodox approach to the case as the evidence keeps getting stranger. With Eric’s hallucinations intensifying and the body count rising, can the pair separate truth from illusion long enough to catch a monster?

Interesting but predictable

This book was interesting but predictable. Some parts were a bit cliche, like people with mental illness seeing ghosts that others cant.

I didn't like how predictable it was. I guessed before I was halfway.

Besides that it was enjoyable, just too predictable.

Spooky thriller.

So much better than I anticipated! I expected a lot of psychological mumbo jumbo about schizophrenia but really there wasn’t. The main character suffered from it but the storyline line wasn’t at all hampered or dulled by it. It was predictable at times but that didn’t prevent me from tuning in every free moment I had.

Entertaining

I enjoyed the fast-pace and twists and turns this story took in the telling. It was entertaining and always left me wanting to know more every time I had to stop listening. Julie McKay made me feel as if there were more than one person telling the story as she moved from character to character seamlessly. Very enjoyable. Thanks for the story.

Kept me on the edge of my seat

First time reading this author, and I was pleasantly surprised. Ms. Barz did a wonderful job defining her characters. I was quickly engaged by the people and the story. I love it when a book makes me anxious for the characters in the final climactic scene. Well done Ms Barz.
Also Julie McKay is an excellent voice actor. She did a great job narrating this story. I will be on the lookout for other works narrated by her.

A decent read

The story is extremely predictable since it follows the same cliche pattern of events that plague the horror/mystery genre. Nevertheless, it is well-written and well performed. The analogies (such as comparing a woman’s facial reaction to that of someone who farted in an elevator) kept the characters likable and the story entertaining.

Good story but a few annoying parts

Story and characters were good, but some characters didn't seem necessary to the story at all. Like the author intended to have bigger parts for them, changed their mind, and couldn't remove them without a major rewrite. The supernatural part was interesting and worked better than I thought it would.

Really enjoyed this story and performance

I absolutely loved this book. I normally listen to mainly romance but every now and then I love a good palate cleanser and this was perfect. The narration was outstanding. For me, I was kept guessing at what might happen next for most of the book. This was my first listen by this author and narrator but it is not going to be my last. I have already downloaded the next two in this series and can't wait to see what happens next.

To Wordy For My Taste

When you start to get into the story, she would start getting way to descriptive with things that really had little bearing on the story.

In my opinion, was a good story, read well, but leave some of the descriptors behind.
