An Odyssey Honor Audiobook

In a novel-in-verse that brims with grief and love, National Book Award-winning and New York Times best-selling author Elizabeth Acevedo writes about the devastation of loss, the difficulty of forgiveness, and the bittersweet bonds that shape our lives.

Don't miss the audiobook, read by Elizabeth Acevedo, the beloved author and narrator of The Poet X, winner of an Odyssey Honor and an AudioFile Earphones Award winner.

Camino Rios lives for the summers when her father visits her in the Dominican Republic. But this time, on the day when his plane is supposed to land, Camino arrives at the airport to see crowds of crying people....

In New York City, Yahaira Rios is called to the principal’s office, where her mother is waiting to tell her that her father, her hero, has died in a plane crash.

Separated by distance - and Papi’s secrets - the two girls are forced to face a new reality in which their father is dead and their lives are forever altered.

And then, when it seems like they’ve lost everything of their father, they learn of each other.

Elizabeth Acevedo does it again!
As a Dominican-American, I am loving that so many recent works are exploring the cultural DNA of the island and its people ( Dominicana by Angie Cruz and Julia Alvarez’s Afterlife come to mind). Elizabeth Acevedo’s latest novel, Clap When You Land, takes it to another level. The lives of two sisters are shattered when their father is killed in a plane crash. Yahaira lives in New York, and Camino in the Dominican Republic—and neither know the other exists. This tragic accident will bring them together—but how? Camino’s life is turned upside-down as she is left without a financial lifeline. Meanwhile, Yahaira’s frustrations with her father are so trivial compared to everything Camino has to deal with. Acevedo’s verse is beautiful and draws the listener immediately, skillfully switching between Camino's and Yahaira's voices. The sisters are unique, juxtaposed through their upbringing, but joined in their grief. They are trying to come to terms with not only their father's death, but with each other. Clap When You Land is an incredibly powerful and emotional work, and a must listen!

slow start but satisfying finish

Overall good book. The beginning reading of the book flowed like spoken word which at first turned me off but im glad I pressed through it. My only wish is there is a second book or maybe a movie.

5 🌟

Elizabeth Acevedo writes with such passion and raw beauty. I first listened to The Poet X as my first book written by her not knowing the style in which she writes. After that, I knew there was no other way I would read her books. I will listen to the audio versions because only then are you truly immersed in her world.

Clap When You Land is sad, emotional, beautiful, inspiring, hopeful. It brings light to the very real tragedy that this story sheds light on. Yahaira and Camino, two sisters unaware of the others existence until they were both 16 years old. My heart broke for these two girls, the separate lives they led, the secrets they kept, the secrets that were kept from them, the personal traumas they went through. In the end, these women along with Yahaira's mom grew stronger and closer than they ever thought possible. It took one man, their father, living two lives to die in order for their families to officially come together.

I can't say enough and look forward to listening to the next one, With the Fire on High.

Yes!

I can't buy Elizabeth Acevedo's books fast enough. She writes with respect for young people, keeping her characters and plotlines realistic, yet optimistic. Their lives are complex. They have dreams and there are distinct barriers to those dreams. In Clap When You Land, there are strong themes of family and friendship. Characters are flawed, but not irredeemable. More is revealed at just the right pace, and any reader wants to see both girls be happy and healed. While we don't get to see how things turn out down the road, there is enough hope that things are just fine. Acevedo, as always, does an excellent job of narration and the voice of the other main character is great. I am looking forward to the next YA book she writes for me to get into and ask teachers to put on the syllabi.

Beautiful, lyrical writing

I rarely give 5 stars as I reserve them for books I believe are or will be classics. I'm not sure this book will become a classic, but it is so beautifully written I had to give it 5 stars. It started a little slow and I balked because the narrators almost sounded like they were "rapping", but I soon fell into the rhythm of their telling of the story and they were excellent!

Finding What We Share

Elizabeth Acevedo is my favorite author. Her stories are both relatable and enlightening - providing access to what is seemingly inaccessible by finding what lives deep within my soul.
