About this listen
Dean and Jess knew the house had a tragic past but it did not stop them from making the move with their young daughters. It was supposed to be a new - and bigger - home with which they could continue to build upon their already established happy memories but as the house's past begins to haunt them they realize it is not the dream they first hoped it to be.
From Matt Shaw (author of The Cabin, Happy Ever After and Sick B*stards) comes a new novella; a tale of psychological horror and slow-building tension leading to an unforgettable climax.

Story
A group of strangers is pitted against one another in Matt Shaw’s latest extreme horror. The game is simple. Each of the contestants is asked a question: How much to complete a certain task? They then have two minutes to name a price, but if they go too high and their fellow contestants are cheaper, they have just priced themselves out of the game. The trick is to go high enough to win a good amount of money but low enough to ensure you are the winner.

Have you ever had to swerve to avoid someone who hasn't used their indicators? Have you ever been served by rude staff members who clearly don't want to be working? Have you ever listened to just how rude old people can be? Ever got frustrated listening to the excessive open-mouthed chewing of someone sitting near you? Have you ever been cheated on by a partner? Story
The world is overpopulated. Resources are running out. In an effort to balance things out, the government has stepped in with a radical new lottery system. All names are put into a computer, with 200 names being drawn at random. Of those people, 100 will get one color (red) token and 100 will get another color token (white). Whatever color they received, they had to go to the government-run club for the night. Of those who received the white token, they would be going home the following day. For those who received the red tokens? They would be leaving in a body bag.

Story
It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

But Daimbert, newly hired Royal Wizard of Yurt, senses an evil spell at work. But who could be responsible? The beautiful young queen? Her flighty aunt? The dour chaplain? The old, retired Royal Wizard, who seems to know more than he's saying? Or someone from out of the castle's past?

Story
I never thought I would end up here. Alone, in a cold one-bedroom apartment, only seeing my precious daughter once a week. Another woman is living the life that was once mine. I wish I was still married to my ex-husband, the love of my life. I dream of tucking my five-year-old child into her ballerina bed sheets every night. I miss living in a beautiful house, the perfect family home, with a winding staircase and a sprawling garden. I’d do anything to be with my family again. To start over and prove to them that I’ve changed, that I won’t lose control like before.

Story
Fatima, Farah, Bubblee and Mae, the four sisters of the Amir family, are sometimes tired of being the only Muslim young women in a rural British village, not helped by their eccentric neighbours, including the hippie nudists next door. Oldest sister Fatima - or, as her family have always nicknamed her, Fatti (which, she worryingly suspects, has just as much to do with her inability to lose weight and guilty-pleasure love of Primula squeezy cheese as it does her birth name) - is having a particularly hard time finding her place in the world.

But appearances can be deceiving, and when Stella and Rea's worlds collide they realise they have much in common.

Thriller scribe Sophie Katz is as hard-boiled as a woman who drinks Grande Caramel Brownie Frappuccionos can be. So Sophie knows it's not paranoia, or post-divorce, living-alone-again jitters, when she becomes convinced that a crazed reader is sneaking into her apartment to reenact scenes from her books. The police, however, can't tell a good plot from an unmarked grave.

Lizzie Dixon's life feels as though it's fallen apart. Instead of the marriage proposal she was hoping for from her boyfriend, she is unceremoniously dumped, and her job is about to go the same way. So there's only one option: to go back home to the village she grew up in and to try to start again. Ending?
I guess that the end of this story is left up to each individual reader because there certainly wasn't one in the final chapter!

Pet Peaves
One of my greatest pet peaves has always been adults not listening to what their children have to say, or shrugging it off as being unimportant. I usually say, "You should have listened.....you got what you deserved. What a great "told you so!" story.

Great start ... not so great finish!
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
For the most part, yes. Enjoyed the story up until the final scene. More disappointed than surprised. At first, enjoyed the suspected paranormal approach. Kind of wished it had remained so. The ending or final scene was too much of a let down.
Has A House in the Country turned you off from other books in this genre?
Of course not. Although, I didn't enjoy the final scene of this particular story, still would continue to read more of this author's contributions.
What about Wayne Farrell’s performance did you like?
Wayne Farrell's performance was top notch. His voice and inflections reflected the story perfectly. Would continue to listen to his other performances.
Did A House in the Country inspire you to do anything?
I am a part time fiction writer and do specialize very close to this genre. Yes, I'm afraid his story of A House in the Country does inspire me to return to my writing.
Any additional comments?
My criticism of A House in the Country is best described as a story left unfinished. There was too much left unsaid and undone.

Loved it!
I'm not one for supernatural books, but this one was a gem. But then again, all of Matt Shaw's books are.

Not good...
First off, the narrarator did this thing with his voice where he would drop it down unnaturally low; it was very annoying. I think I could have dealt with it if it had been the book's only issue.
The story itself started off okay and held my attention well for a while. It wasn't one that was difficult to walk away from, but I did care about the characters and wnated to know what was going on with them. And then, the story shifted. It went from being a supernatural thriller to one that should be filed away in the erotica section. In the beginning, the couple in the story was intimate, but by the end of the book, everyone was and in a more graphic manner than they were in the beginning. It was like he couldn't figure out what to do with these characters, so he would fill the pages with sex and hope for the best. The actual story line at the end of the book was weak and was poorly covered by the author's attempt at erotica. It was not scary and was actually pretty lame.
