About this listen
An Amazon Charts bestseller.
A missing child. A desperate mother. And a house full of secrets.
Two years ago, Julia lost her family in a tragic accident. Her husband drowned trying to save their daughter, Lily, in the river near their rural home. But the little girl’s body was never found—and Julia believes Lily is somehow still alive.
Alone and broke, Julia opens her house as a writers’ retreat. One of the first guests is Lucas, a horror novelist, who becomes obsessed with finding out what happened to Lily. But within days of his arrival, the peace of the retreat is shattered by a series of eerie events.
When Lucas’s investigation leads him and Julia into the woods, they discover a dark secret—a secret that someone will do anything to protect...
What really happened that day by the river? Why was Lily never found? And who, or what, is haunting the retreat?
From the bestselling author of Follow You Home and The Magpies comes his most terrifying novel yet.

It’s the house of their dreams. Former marine Harry and his wife, Sasha, have packed up their life and their golden retriever, Dash, and fled the corporate rat race to live off the land in rural Idaho. Their breathtaking new home sits on more than forty acres of meadow, aspen trees, and pine forest in the Teton Valley. Even if their friends and family think it’s a strange choice for an up-and-coming pair of urban professionals, Harry and Sasha couldn’t be happier about the future they’re building, all by their lonesome.

One woman is trapped in the death-grip of the past - and every one of its dark secrets - in this riveting novel of psychological suspense from the award-winning author of The Sisters and Local Girl Missing. She can run… As much as Libby Hall needs a vacation, she’s never considered taking one until she sees the note for a house swap. Suffering a miscarriage was a personal turning point. Saving a child from a burning school was a public one. Just as the emotional fallout of both incidents takes its toll, along comes her lifesavers - the Heywoods.

Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred. It’s now 1983, and home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at a decaying Hope’s End to care for Lenora after her previous nurse fled in the middle of the night.

Now, her sudden return and the mind-bending tale of where she’s been will challenge our very perception of the truth. For 20 years after Tara Martin disappeared, her parents and her brother, Peter, lived in denial of the grim fact that she was gone for good. Then suddenly on Christmas Day, the doorbell rings at her parents’ home, and there, dishevelled and slightly peculiar looking, Tara stands. It’s a miracle, but alarm bells are ringing for Peter. Tara’s story just does not add up.

Shortly after they arrive, things begin to turn ominous.

fantastic classic mystery
This was my first Mark Edwards book, and it was fantastic. The narrator was top notch, and really brought so much depth to the characters. He also did a good job with the female voices, which can be tricky. The story was a wonderful mystery that kept me wondering until the end. I highly recommend this book!

Enjoyable, Unique Story
I found the overall believability of the protagonist's thoughts and actions in this book to be refreshing. While I see the value in a story told through the eyes of an unreliable narrator, the twists and turns in this story felt more impactful and well deserved and the characters more relatable than those I have seen in many books in this genre lately. I really enjoyed this book, and listened to the entire thing in a span of time far too short for me to admit.

Just not into dinner theatre style murder mysteries
If you ARE into this genre, this is probably a fabulous book. But for me, I felt like I was listening to a slightly darker version of a “Golden Girls” episode in which they are trying to figure out ‘who done it’ at dinner. The narration was good and the writing was clever, even humorous at times, but I just couldn’t get into it. I probably should have read more reviews and book details describing the storyline before I took the slow plunge.... because it was a SLOW “plunge” before I just gave up.

It is my first time reading or listening to a book by Mark Edwards, however after this one I will be buying more. As an American, I was very glad to hear a voice actor from the region that the book's setting takes place.

Began strong but ended weak
The begin and middle (really right up to the end) were fairly entertaining. There were some unexplained “facts”, but I held out hope it would all be explained and wrap up satisfactorily in the end. I was wrong. The last hour or so if the story really went off track and became so outlandishly implausible and illogical that it ruined the entire story. It almost became fantasy at the end. My other issue was that the lead make and female were supposed to have a suppressed romantic desire for each other, but the author did nothing to build up to their “romantic encounter” and make it believable. It was almost like that scene was thrown in as an afterthought. I will say that the author did a good job of setting the scene as a beautiful but haunted, lonely and eerie place tucked away in the Welsh woods. Other than that, this book did not even come close to hitting the mark. I was especially disappointed that it all went downhill at the end because I put so much time into listening and was expecting some satisfaction.
