Helen's twin sister had died almost two years earlier, shortly before she was also to be married. Helen had heard her sister's dying words, "The speckled band!" but was unable to decode their meaning.

"Anthem" is a fascinating dystopian sci-fi novella by Ayn Rand, published in 1938. It takes place at some unspecified future date when mankind has entered another dark age. Technological advancement is now carefully planned and the concept of individuality has been eliminated... Equality 7-2521, our hero, realizes the importance of his own existence only when he comes to know and feel that one is the centre of one's universe, and that one's own perception gives the world and one's life its meaning.

"Second Variety" is a short story by Philip K. Dick, first published in Space Science Fiction magazine, in 1953. A nuclear war between the Soviet Union and the West has reduced much of the world to a barren wasteland. The war continues, however, among the scattered remains of humanity. The Western forces have developed "claws", which are autonomous self-replicating robots to fight on their side. It is one of Dick's many stories in which nuclear war has rendered the Earth's surface uninhabitable.

"Emma McChesney and Company" is the third instalment in a series of novels about the independent career woman, mother and divorcee Emma McChesney, published in 1915 by author Edna Ferber, famed and loved for her beautiful descriptions of "ordinary women" and their lives. This work is no exception; here our heroine travels to Argentina to sell her products - petticoats and skirts - but will success be awaiting...? And what about romance...?

"No Great Magic" fits into author Fritz Leiber's dizzying view of history as a battlefield in constant change. "The Jungle Book" is a wonderful collection of stories by world famous English author Rudyard Kipling. The original publications contain illustrations, some by the author's father, John Lockwood Kipling. The tales in the book are fables, using animals in an anthropomorphic manner to give moral lessons. The best-known of them are the three stories revolving around the adventures of Mowgli, an abandoned "man cub" who is raised by wolves in the Indian jungle.
