About this listen

Binge the Complete Series!

I was burned at the stake at fourteen...

I was drowned in a lake when I was twenty-four...

At twenty-seven, I was stoned in a public square...

I have died a hundred times in a hundred different ways, usually at the hands of the humans I've tried to save. But when a pregnant young woman finds her way into my tattoo shop with a demon on her tail, things go from bad to worse. Being a centuries-old witch isn't going to help me—nothing will.

This time I might just die in a way that sticks... Permanently.

If you enjoy foul-mouthed heroines, dark humor, and enemies-to-lovers, then check out Woman of Blood & Bone, the first book in the action-packed Rogue Ethereal series.

For an introduction to the Ethereal world, listen to the steamy Phoenix Rising series.

A Strong Start with Some Missing Pieces

Let me start by saying—the audiobook was really well done. The narrators did an absolutely amazing job, and I loved both of their voices! Their performance definitely elevated the story.

That said, while this is listed as book one in the series, it’s actually a spin-off from another series from what I can tell, and I think that tripped me up a bit. It took me a while to settle into the story—mostly in terms of the world building, but also understanding the characters’ dynamics. I could tell there was some backstory I was missing, which made it harder to fully connect at first.

Still, I really enjoyed it! The characters were interesting and had great chemistry, and once I found my footing, I was all in. I’ll definitely be going back to read more from this author—starting with the other series, because I need the full picture!

Unexpected turn of events

This is book 1 of Rogue Ethereal and does end in a cliffhanger. I could not stop listening to this book. The characters took on a life of their own, which enhanced my listening experience. There is danger, suspense, grief and heartbreak. The main character Max has died in so many different ways and all while helping others. When a pregnant woman and a stranger come into her tattoo shop, she decides to help the woman escape her abuser. Little did she know what an unexpected turn her life would take. After reading this book I cannot wait until the next in the series.

intriguing and fun

I love this series but this book stands out. I adore the characters and the plot is very twisty and nailbiting, it's also got some very sad parts too.
I've read a couple books but found I loved the narration. especially Striker though I didn't get enough of him.

Don’t go in blind

The world is vibrant, the magical races intriguing, and Max? She’s got sass, scars, and enough grit to be likable. The action keeps things moving, and the underlying lore teases a universe worth exploring. But baby, this book stumbles hard in one place: context.

If you’re like me and haven’t read the author’s previous series (Phoenix Rising), you’re gonna feel like you walked into a party two drinks too late and no one’s explaining the inside jokes. 3 stars because I was simply confused for a good portion of this book. I wish the book description mentioned it was a spin off.

The narration was great. Carries the chaos well, gives the dialogue enough flavor, and keeps the tempo up.
Final word? If you squint past the confusion and just roll with the chaos, there’s fun to be had.

Love Max!!

Loved seeing Max again after meeting her in the Ashes to Ashes series. She is who I want to be when I grow up. Kick-butt witch who takes no crap and always helps those around her. She is beautiful, smart and snarky as all get out. I loved reading more about her in this book. Fantastic characters, love the supernatural, the awesome storyline. Listening to the story brought it so much more alive then I could ever have imagined after reading the story. The narrators were amazing. Annie Anderson never disappoints.

(revised 04/08/25) Centuries-old witch, tattoo artist, half-demon…

This story has a snarky witch heroine with plenty of banter which I personally love.

Maxima, aka Max, is tattooing artist witch that can’t seem to die since she has apparently died 138 times and resurrected since her birth in the 1600s. She works with her best friend and tattooing partner Striker who tends to get her in and out of trouble from time to time. The story jumps right in with Striker inviting Max to an exclusive club as his +1 in Denver’s seedy warehouse district only to find out Striker doesn’t have a +1 invite for the rogue witch.

I have the book as well and must say that I enjoyed listening to the characters versus reading due to the flashbacks Max has in the story. The flashbacks were confusing to read, but come across clearly in the audio characterizations. All the characters voiced were spot on and I look forward to listening to the rest of the series.

Edit to above review after reading and listening to the above audio revised 04/08/25:

Centuries-old witch, tattoo artist, half-demon…

So the above premise of the book had me hooked immediately to get this book, which I've had in my TBR since 2022. I recently received a free copy of the audio book from Booksprout and decided to read the book first and then listen to the audio.

I must admit, that right off the bat, the 1st couple of chapters were confusing, but I realized that the characters were most likely a spin-off of another series, so I wasn't overly bothered. There were also a couple of times in the dialog where I wasn't exactly sure which character was speaking, which led me to go back and forth in the pages. Both of these issues made me take off a star 🌟 in the rating. Other than that, I really enjoyed the characters and especially Max with her snarky "fake it till you make it" bravado.

After I finished reading, I immediately listened to the audio book, which proved much easier to follow with the different character voices, so I gave the audiobook 5 stars 🌟.

I also noticed that the series is complete and in the box set form, so I recently picked up the remaining books in the set. I also picked up Ms. Anderson's Phoenix Rising series in the box set form to get a better look into this world that is alluded to in the 1st couple of chapters of Max's and Ian's story. Happy reading.
