Publisher's summary

A chilling new version of Susan Hill’s classic ghost story, narrated by Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You, The Lazarus Project).

Eel Marsh house stands alone, surveying the windswept salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway. Mrs Alice Drablow lived here as a recluse. Now Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor with a London firm, is summoned to attend her funeral, unaware of the tragic and terrible secrets which lie behind the house's shuttered windows.

It is not until he glimpses a young woman at the funeral with a wasted face, dressed all in black, that a sense of profound unease begins to creep over him, a feeling deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk about the woman in black or what happens whenever she is seen.

Kipps has to stay on in the lonely house, sorting out Mrs. Drablow's papers. The mist begins to enshroud it and the surrounding graveyard and the high tide cuts it off from the outside world....

The sounds!!!

This is a great gothic ghost story on its own. However, the sound work on Audible takes it over the top!! Thoroughly enjoyed and got spooked multiple times. Also, the remake of Radiohead’s Street Spirit was great and a perfect fit for this story.

Superb production value.

I listened to this book exclusively through my headphones while walking my dog at night. There were many instances that made my skin crawl, mostly due to the excellent use of sound effects. I have listened to dozens of great audiobooks, but this version of The Woman in Black has the best production values I have heard. The story and narrator are great too, but I hope Audible continues producing more books like this. Very immersive experience.

All I can say is wow! This audiobook is amazing. Creepy and atmospheric. Not gory or gross, just an excellent ghost story.

The perfect ghost story.

I will forever recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a little ghost story. The atmosphere was dreadful. Not too much explanation as it didn’t take away from the spookiness of the story.

Engrossing AF!

Though I have seen the movie, I feel I was more engrossed in the spatial aspects Dolby affords. I literally jumped and did a 180 while looking for something in my closet when a door closed in the story. Apple EarPods pro are serious about active noise cancelling and spatial audio tho Sony’s WD-H…..don’t remember model name - were equally good if just lacking a bit of crispness. Films, I watch with friends, music - I mean live shows >> immersion while on a run & video games are dynamic enough to take advantage of all your senses but these Dolby mixed audiobooks are definitely not the ones you ‘put on till you are sleeping’ anymore - unless of course you pick one from soundscape genre. How am I going to listen to just stereo fiction anymore!!
