About this listen

A grumpy smuggler meets a bumbling professor and treasure is found.

An explorer at heart, former university professor Phillip Singleton's adventures have only taken place in his imagination - until recently. Exploring the Cornish coast to research a travel book, he encounters a living example of a pirate archetype. Dark-haired, black-bearded Carne Treleaven might have been hewn from the very rock his name describes, and Phillip is eager to discover more.

Carne has little patience for the awkward, dreamy professor, an outsider who must be steered away from local secrets. He agrees to serve as a guide to seaside caves where smugglers once operated only to keep Phillip away from more recent activity. As personalities clash, secrets unfold, and riches are revealed, the two polar opposites find the point where their similarities lay. Carne's old beliefs are shattered by his attraction to a man, and he must decide if he's willing to take a huge step outside his familiar life and into a brand new world.

Good, but not my favorite.

Started off strong, but then dragged a little in places. A couple of times I found myself saying "oh come on, get on with it".
All in all a good story, but not favorite by theses 2 outstanding authors.

Sweet

Story: 3.75⭐️
Narration: 4.5⭐️

A delightful historical with a gruff bi-curious smuggler and a kind-hearted academic. The small town atmosphere is well done and incorporated niceley into the "intrigue" in plot.

Salty Sea

Excellent tale of awkward Oxford scholar meet rough with gruff salty sailor and the suspicious yet somewhat friendly villagers in remote Cornwall. Plodding forth from his fancy car with camera in hand and an amiable demeanor, Phillip charms his way into housing with his village appointed guide since no inns or other accomodations were to be had. Wrought from the rocky shore, Carne struggles with his fascination of the professor and growing attraction while steering him clear of the town's secrets. Suspense and peril, rough and polished, this satisfies.

I recommend it

The professor is the younger man and the other one is not a student or anything like that. That’s what I thought this book was about so it took me a while to decide to listen to it. This book is more like an adventure with love, my favorite two things together. I found the characters rather interesting, which is something important to me or i get bored no matter how good the plot is. There are internal dialogues, doubts, insecurities, secrets, all of which you normally find when you’re getting to know another person -it’s definitely not one of those books where everything is perfect between the mc and the problems come from outside sources. When you finish, you get that feeling of having being on an adventure and having found love too. I recommend it.

Brings on the tears😭

A great storyline. Tender and believable. Both characters are searching for a place to belong.."Most of us go through life with blinders on, only knowing that station to which we were born to. You have been given the rare opportunity to shed your bonds for a spell and see the world from a completely different perspective. What you choose to do with that knowledge is up to you." Andrew...steward on the S.S. Immaculata.

It’s lovely.

Amazing story with a beautiful ending. It’s literally one of my favorite stories now. This story made me feel warm. The narrator did a great job too.

Wonderful!

Re-read November 2016 (audiobook)
The narration of this book by Patrick Eastham was really enjoyable. I'm American so I am a very bad judge of British accents so I have no idea if Carne's Cornish accent was accurate, but I loved it. It was deep and sexy. Still a 5 star read!

I started this and couldn't put it down. As usual the duo of Dee and Devon did not disappoint (try and say that 3 times fast). If you are a fan of M/M historicals, this is a must read.
