About this listen

Pretty and popular, Miss Clare Westmore knows exactly what (or rather, who) she wants: the next Duke of Harrington. But when she twists her ankle on the eve of the Season's most touted event, Clare is left standing in the wallflower line watching her best friend dance away with her duke.

Dr. Daniel Merial is tempted to deliver more than a diagnosis to London's most unlikely wallflower, but he doesn't have time for distractions, even one so delectable. Besides, she's clearly got her sights on more promising prey. So why can't he stop thinking about her?

All Clare wants to do is return to the dance floor. But as her former friends try to knock her permanently out of place, she realizes with horror she is falling for her doctor instead her duke. When her ankle finally heals and she faces her old life again, will she throw herself back into the game?

Or will her time in the wallflower line have given her a glimpse of who she was really meant to be?

I loved this book!

I loved this! Very enjoyable, well-written - very well-written, laugh out loud humor - this book had them all. Jennifer McQuiston is one of my favorite newer authors. Her previous books were also very good and this new series starts off well and has tremendous potential.

The narrator did a great job, as well.

Overall, this one gets my rare 5 stars. It was a delight. Brava!

Such a sweet story

I am so glad I purchased this book, the story was so sweet. I loved the two main characters and the slow growth of their relationship. The secondary characters were enchanting and I hope they get their own stories told in future books. This book was unique since many of the scenes were in the less glamorous parts of london. Overall it was a great book, definitely worth a credit!

Amazing and Original!

This book is refreshing and very different from most regency romances and I absolutely loved it! Our hero Daniel is a young doctor who treats our heroine Clare for a possible broken foot. The banter between them is very realistic, as is the relationship and interactions between Clare and her two siblings. I loved all the side plots too, and how caring and compassionate both Clare and Daniel are. This book is simply wonderful! Narration was outstanding as well!

Great Narrator!!!

I haven't even finished listening to this book, but I just had to give a kudos to Weston for this narration. I have to be able to differentiate between characters. The narrator has to bring life to story. She does both and more. And the writing has to be great. Which McQuiston does. I have been buying some duds lately. Duds that were Edgar award winners or nominees, but I was HAPPILY spuprised by this gem. I wish Julia Quinn would take note. I Love her books, but narrator could be better. LOVE this book!!

FANTASTIC!!!

Any additional comments?

I purchased this audio book right after its release. I love wallflowers and spinsters so I was hoping for a good story. I tried many times to listen to it but just couldn't get into it due to the heroine, Claire and her awful friends...One could say they were the Victorian version of Mean Girls. Once I got past the 1.5 hour mark, I was engrossed!

Claire had one goal in mind; to become a Duchess. She's has had her eye on the heir to a Dukedom for sometime now. She's the cream of the crop along with her snobbish friends Sophie and Rose. Everything is going as planned until she sprains her ankle and is forced to be absent from the ton. How will she ever catch her Duke if she's at home with her foot propped up on a pillow? Unfortunately, this could be the least of her worries. Fate, secrets and rumors have a way of changing ones outlook.

Enter Dr. Daniel Merialis. He's a handsome doctor who is working on trying find a perfect method of administering Anesthesia. He's been rejected so far but is currently working on an experiment that is very promising. Due to a frail patient, he was invited to a ball and he notices that Claire is limping. Offering assistance backfires as she insults him for the most part. However, she does decide to allow him to look at her ankle and care for her as she heals. He's drawn to her immediately, despite the difference in their station. He knows that nothing can ever come of it but there's something about her that intrigues him. Dare he hope?

Once Daniel comes into Claire's life, she starts to thaw even when she doesn't want to. We see the smart, witty, curious, funny Claire (actually, I felt that she was always this way but she felt that she had to be a snob in order to secure her future). It was a believable transformation and she grew so much throughout the book. They have a great chemistry and the dialogue is very witty and entertaining at times. As a reader, I knew there would be a HEA but I was still nervous!

Despite her conflicting feelings, Claire still has aspirations to be a Duchess so she ruthlessly tries to remove Daniel from her life. Additionally, she has noticed something odd going on with her parents (Claire realizes this early in the book when she walks in on something that has the ability to fuel the gossips for weeks). She's not sure if her friends are her friends and now rumors are now flying around the ton about her... All of her carefully laid plans are on the cusp of being ruined!

I promise you, this book was great. I loved her siblings, Jeffrey and Lucy. I loved the relationship they had. I also liked her parents. The thing about this family is, it felt so much like a normal family. Yes, they were part of the ton but they were different. There are many secrets, possibly scandals and intrigue in this story but all very well done. When sparks start to fly and secrets become reality, what will happen to Claire, Daniel and her family?

Read it to find out.

This book will steal your heart

Once again Jennifer McQuiston has written a beautiful story about family and love that made me cry! The H has such a big heart, and I was cheering him all through the book. I was cautious that our h really deserved him, but she is a complex character and needed to grow her sense of back from the social restrictions she had imposed on herself. The journey is hard for her, but well worth it. I'm sure we all can relate to being someone we really aren't in order to fit in. I can only imagine to amount of pressure for a young lady to conform in that time in history.
The somewhat crazy quilt ending was well done and I loved it. Family is family and love is always there, no matter what. Pass the tissue!

Good story, not a very good narration.

So this story was good. I really enjoyed it. I liked these two main characters Clare and Daniel together. They ended up making a good couple after a bit of angst between them. A couple of nicely written sex scenes, not erotica not rated G. I absolutely loved her brother and sister! They were a hoot. Funny to the point and I looked forward to all the scenes they were in.

The story line and plot was good. I liked that he was a doctor and inventor. A nice twist to HR instead of a Duke. There was lots of great dialogue throughout the entire book. I love lots of dialogue.

As for the narration. Well, Lana Weston REALLY REALLY needs to work on her men's voices. They all sound like women. At times I had rewind to see who was talking. She also reads a bit slow and needs to speed it up and use a bit more emotion when reading. She does have a nice reading voice that doesn't grate on the ear nerves, so there is that. I want to listen to the next book but I am hesitant because of this narrators mens voices. Sigh..

not sure why

all the rave reviews. 1) awful narrator that can only perform female parts. no idea whom was whom due to this. 2) 1/2 way through, and I quit. I'm no quitter, but this is Boring! 3) I really disliked the "heroine". 4) I see no alpha male hero here, and I'm not into submissive men. 5) no HEAT at all. I really wish this would have been mentioned so I wouldn't have wasted time or money.
