Publisher's summary

This is DC Smith's third investigation with the Diver and Diver Associates agency. They have been asked by a member of Norfolk's aristocracy to look into the tragic death of her younger brother, Freddie, the late Lord Thorpe of the title. The inquest verdict was of misadventure, but it isn't long before Smith begins to suspect there has been a serious miscarriage of justice.

So sad when latest one of these ends....

I am just so engrossed in this series and this latest book was one of the best! Usual highly entertaining dialogue and introspection by Smith. Complex plot. Such very likeable and fascinating characters! I used to only read, but now enjoy the audible editions read by Gildart Jackson very much! I only wonder why Masterpiece hasn't done a series based on these! Thanks so much for continuing with the Smith exploits!

Another winner.

D.C. Smith always a great read. I couldn't put it down. And the narrator is as always right on the mark.

Does Not Get Any Better!

I am a big DC Smith fan! This is among one of my favorite books in the series. Peter Grainger writes a story filled with emotional, and psychological highs and lows. He weaves a plot like a spider weaves a web. His descriptions transport you to being there, walking with Smith and his dog on the salt flats and drinking coffee with him at Drifts End. It is a tribute to his writing genius when he can take such simple events and make them interesting to the reader. He makes me feel like I am part of the story. When a writer can make you feel like this you know they are special. Gildart Jackson once again breathes life into this book making each character come to life! Well done to both gentlemen! I look forward to the next book. A great big thank you to Peter and Gildart for this project! One small word of advice to Mr. Grainger the blind character Miriam is not portrayed realistically. As a blind person myself I can give you some tips Peter, feel free to reach out!

As always, a delight with a wee edge

Expertly conveyed with a rye humor andl edgy elegance by both writer and performer. it's a cozy mystery that gets occasionally sinister -- not quite noir, but adjacent -- with writing and plot one wants to allow adequate time for full rising, as in an ancient sourdough. I should like to spend fall and winter as a neighbor of Jo and Smith. Not too close, mind you-- I like my privacy, too.

Loved the storyline

It was exciting without a whole lot of “action” scenes, and I listened to the whole thing almost right through in one go. It was one of my favorite in this series, and I honestly think the preview summary did not do it justice, as I wasn’t expecting it to be very interesting. It has inspired me to go back through the series once more. Love it and I hope the DC and Kings Lake series go on forever.

Full Marks!

You never know what to expect with the 11th in a series; sometimes ti's clear the author should just stop. Not so here! This is as good as any in the series, with a fresh story line, descriptive settings and interesting characters. If you like DC Smith, you'll want to listen to this one. Oh, and narration great as always.

I love this author/narrator creation!

I eagerly await the next Peter Grainger book & when it arrives I listen to it every moment that I can….and then mourn that it is over, so I listen again! How pleasant it is to have a compelling story with such likable characters! It seems that most writers include unnecessary profanity in their books now, but the books by this author are an example of intelligent word-craft that is engaging and funny or dramatic, fitting the characters and circumstances that showcase true literary talent. Gildart Jackson is an amazing voice actor & is as gifted a narrator as could be found for the Grainger books.

Complex and satisfying story. Very enjoyable

This is an excellent addition to the DC Smith stories. They all seem like old friends now & I await each release impatiently. The story again is complex & satisfying, and I enjoyed every minute. Narration as usual is impeccable. It’s interesting because there’s a line in the story saying that if you change narrators during a series, your fans will be very upset. I hope this means Gildart Jackson is in for the long haul.

Unexpected Plot

Smith is in fine form as he helps a beautiful, charming aristocrat pursue justice for her dead brother. The narrator performs with zest and flair. in fact, I know I enjoyed this book much more than I would have without the narrator's five star rendering. I admit I felt let down by the plot this time. It wasn't much of a mystery. It was more like a jigsaw puzzle - a metaphore the writer in fact plays with. How the puzzle is put together highlighted the talents and idiosyncratic nature's of the characters. I think I prefer the suspense and tight plotting of Grainger's Kings Lake series. Nonetheless, I'm a huge Grainger fan and can hardly wait for his next.
