About this listen

Who is Sherlock Holmes?

We are 40 years into the future, and London is a city in decay. John Watson has returned from medical service in the war in Afghanistan and lives by himself in a run-down part of town. On his way home from work, he stumbles upon a beaten man in the street – unconscious and completely naked. His chances of survival are minimal.

The same evening, a passenger plane crashes in Richmond Park. There are several hundred victims, and Watson and the mysterious man are left to their own devices.

When the man wakes up the following day, he has no memory of who he is or where he came from but reveals excellent detection skills. This is the start of a mystery that unravels rapidly with one burning question at its core.

Can he solve the mystery of himself?

The Red Circle, the first instalment in the upcoming trilogy Becoming Sherlock by international bestseller Anthony Horowitz (known for Midsomer murders, Foyle's war, Alex Rider, and Hawthorne) and Sarah J. Naughton. Story development by Søren Vestergaard.

Incredible!

I enjoy updated versions of Sherlock Holmes and absolutely love this one. It's the story of Sherlock and Watson in the dystopian future London. I'm looking forward to the next book and all those that follow.

Entertaining Read

Very enjoyable “rebirth” Holmes story, into what is otherwise a bleak future, decades ahead of today, but which therefore offers a seedier and pea soup-smoggier London perhaps more similar to one of Doyle’s imagination.

Also, the reader is perhaps my favorite of all time.

Fun to spend a few hours with Sherlock again

The story and narration were excellent. It's as though Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman did another standalone Sherlock film, except it was audio. The narrator even makes his Sherlock character sound like Cumberbatch. I wasn't expecting a dystopian story, which is a genre I usually avoid (it's too close to home), but it was an interesting and fresh way to reintroduce well known characters. Horowitz is a masterful storyteller, so it's no surprise that this was such a compelling story. I'll be using my next 3 credits on the sequels.

clever, well-paced twist on the Holmes story

I’m a big fan of Horowitz but was unfamiliar with Naughton. She did a cracking good job with the story; the writing is excellent and the performance was great. Will be downloading the second part as soon as I click submit on this review!

Uncomfortable and surprising

As another reviewer mentioned, dystopian fiction is too close to home at the moment. It took a little of the pleasure away from the story initially. However, Mr Horowitz is a virtuoso storyteller. Typically, I steer clear of Sherlock tales that stray this far from the canon, but this worked. It did take about 1/3 of the way through for me to get past the setting, but before I knew it, I was hooked.

The narrator was excellent, perfectly suited to the story, just as Rory Kinnear’s superb performances in the Hawthorne series (a masterclass in detective fiction) is perfectly matched.

I wholeheartedly recommend listening if you want to hear a fabulous story and can bend yourself to a different Sherlockian world.

Holmes Post Apocalypse

Interesting take on Sherlock and Watson, hopefully the beginning of a series. Familiar characters reimagined but it will take some getting used to
