About this listen
A game-changing road map for ambitious people to transform chronic stress and anxiety into sustainable happiness and success.
Throughout her years as a licensed clinical psychologist, Mary E. Anderson, PhD—known affectionately as “Dr. A” by her clients—has noticed a pattern: Talented, productive, and often brilliant patients—from business executives to lawyers to grad students—constantly arrive on her couch, drop their flawless facades, and describe feelings of self-doubt, burnout, and worry.
The Happy High Achiever brings Dr. Anderson’s unparalleled expertise to the wider world. The book is a practical guide to her 8 Essentials, a set of powerful principles with actionable, science-based strategies to combat the unique pressures and pitfalls of high-performing individuals. These CBT-based tools help ambitious people like you live free of the perpetual anxiety and fear of failure that can hold you back, and instead enjoy both happiness and high achievement.
The Happy High Achiever will teach you:
- Why striving for perfection actually limits you
- How to navigate uncertainty with less worry and more ease
- How to find relief in moments of overwhelm
- How to overcome the three most problematic ways of thinking that plague high achievers
- Why gratitude is rocket fuel for your success
- How to get clear about what you really want for your life
- How to effectively manage stress to boost your calm and confidence and enhance your performance
Most importantly, you’ll learn anxiety is not the price of admission for your success. You have the power to optimize your life and be your best. You can be a happy high achiever.

“You can achieve without the burnout. These science-based strategies are game-changing, and will challenge so much of what you thought you needed to do to achieve what you want.”—Scott Barry Kaufman, PhD, Host of The Psychology Podcast and author of Transcend
“For the high achiever, ‘self-care’ often sounds like ‘slacking off’ or ‘sacrificing excellence.’ But Mary Anderson shows that treating yourself well is not only compatible with fulfilling your goals—it’s the only sustainable path to being your best. Essential reading for anyone committed to reaching their highest potential.”—Seth Gillihan, PhD, psychologist, and author of Mindful Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Those people who hurt us with their bigotry and ignorance . . . they’re often the people we love: They’re our friends, our parents, our grandparents, and even our religious leaders. And what we want is for them to grow, not to be canceled by an online mob. So what can it look like to strive for justice without causing new harm or giving up on the people we love? Barron shows that the way forward is to create a gracious and risky space for people to learn and evolve. We need to form the sorts of relationships where we can tell difficult truths, set boundaries, forgive, and share stories of our own failings.

Do you know anyone who's truly living The Good Life? Traditionally, philosophers and psychologists have thought of the Good Life in terms of happiness or meaning, or some combination of both. But, if it’s really that simple, if all you need is more happiness or meaning to get to the Good Life, why aren’t more of us achieving that truly “good” life? You’ve hit all the traditional markers, jumped on the happiness train, committed to a gratitude practice, sought purpose in your work, and yet The Good Life you’re seeking, is still out of reach.

Story
Do you know anyone who's truly living The Good Life? Traditionally, philosophers and psychologists have thought of the Good Life in terms of happiness or meaning, or some combination of both. But, if it’s really that simple, if all you need is more happiness or meaning to get to the Good Life, why aren’t more of us achieving that truly “good” life? You’ve hit all the traditional markers, jumped on the happiness train, committed to a gratitude practice, sought purpose in your work, and yet The Good Life you’re seeking, is still out of reach.

Story
Our human nervous system has the power to cope with high stress but not when it's been ground down by the relentless stimuli of today’s world. Over time, these persistent demands leave us burnt out because our nervous system is stuck in survival mode. In this mode, we have reduced capacity for rational thinking and less capacity to care. Dr. Claire Plumbly draws on polyvagal theory and her professional insights as a trauma therapist working with clients experiencing anxiety, trauma and burnout to give you tools to thrive amidst the challenges of modern life, at work, at home.

Story
Almost every Latina has heard the phrase calladita te ves más bonita—you look most beautiful when you are silent. It's a message rooted in machismo passed from generation to generation, and one that poet and Latine therapist, Kim Guerra, grew up on. In Badass Bonita, Guerra tells a story of coming into her own power, and guides listeners through the process of finding their own. Rejecting what she was taught as a girl, she learned to use her voice and the more she listened to that inner niña, the more she unearthed her inner guerrera.

Story
The traditional approach to career is failing us. Determine what you want to do with your life, it says, and methodically make your way toward that destination. We’re taught that once we get there, no matter how fraught and fatiguing the path is, we’ll find fulfillment. This is the 5-year plan, it’s setting the “right” goals, it’s one of the first questions we ask kids: what do you want to be when you grow up? The problem is this advice simply doesn’t work.

Story
Tribalism is our most misunderstood buzzword. We’ve all heard pundits bemoan its rise, and it’s been blamed for everything from political polarization to workplace discrimination. But as acclaimed cultural psychologist and Columbia professor Michael Morris argues, our tribal instincts are humanity’s secret weapon. Ours is the only species that lives in tribes: groups glued together by their distinctive cultures that can grow to a scale far beyond clans and bands. Morris argues that our psychology is wired by evolution in three distinctive ways.

But modern insults like artificial light, contrived time zones, and late-night meals can wreak havoc on your internal clocks. Armed with advances in biology and technology, a circadian renaissance is reclaiming those lost rhythms. The Inner Clock explores the emerging science and its transformative applications: How could taking a walk in the morning and going to bed at the same time each night keep your body in sync?

A must read!!
This book was amazing! The author, Dr. Mary Anderson, did an incredible job at giving clear and concise ways of how to handle high levels of stress & anxiety. As a stressed high achiever myself, when listening to this book, I felt like I was listening to a therapy session tailored specifically for me - which I loved! It is extremely relatable to anyone dealing with anxiety and stress in any area of their lives and it truly gives specific ways of how to navigate those areas while maintaining/increasing our happiness. It helps battle some things a lot of us struggle with like perfectionism, uncertainty in life, caring for ourselves, staying grateful, and much more. I really enjoyed learning the tips and tricks I did from this book and I'm genuinely excited to start implementing some of these things into my life. I already feel a mindset shift and I finished the book feeling very positive & refreshed. I also want to note that listening to the book read by Dr. Mary Anderson was super cool because again it felt like a personal therapy session but most of all, her wonderful bubbly, funny, and compassionate personality shines through even more than simply reading the words on the page and I loved that! Overall, 10/10 amazing book!!
