Fight, survive, adapt, and rely only on yourself. That is Derek’s creed and what's got him through the System Integration on Earth. Everything changed when the System came. Cute bunnies and beautiful butterflies became savage killing machines. Then the Invaders arrived with a single goal: to obtain ownership of this new habitable planet. War has raged ever since. None of this mattered much to Derek, aside from making living a little more perilous.

A world on the precipice of the apocalypse. A secret forged in the flames of war. A chance to start over. For John Sutton, only one of those three things matters. Retired from a decade of brutal war, he wants nothing more than a quiet pastoral life while he does his best to stem the steady increase of his Doom Points before they hit 100, signaling the start of the end. He’s been given a small farm on the outskirts of the empire as thanks for his service, but no matter how far he travels, it's impossible to escape the war's devastating effects on the world.

Story
Life’s tough when you’re trapped in an eight-year-old body on another world. His name is Eight. Not really, but that’s what the System decided after a slip of the tongue. One moment, he was stepping out the office door on the way home, and the next waking up on a hillside below a town wall. Oh, and the gate guard drove him off, because he thought Eight was a monster. What’s a boy to do in a world full of magic and so many, many hungry creatures searching for their next meal? Well, there’s an old man inside that body, and he'll use everything he’s learned to survive.

The academy is a dangerous place; the tournaments held twice each year can cripple or kill the students, and the clans of the empire will go to great lengths to recruit the students they want. Gregory had one dream: to become a magi like the legends of old. Though he was ridiculed by the residents of the village and his unsupportive father, he never wavered from his dream.

Trench warfare, indeed!
I was on the fence about this series until halfway through the first book. Now I’m hooked.
Are there some clichés? Yes. Is Wick a little smart ass? Hell yes. But it’s fun and descriptive and a good story line. Plenty of action, social intrigue and skill use. It was worth the credit, just wish it was longer! But everything that needed to be here was here- this book wasn’t stuffed with fluff and honestly? That’s what Wick would want lol

Good follow up
Well here is some of the middle of book 1 that was missing. The story is all set in the past this time and it picks up right where the last one ends. It was an entertaining listen overall. I still have the same two complaints as last book. I'm not sure I should be cheering for the main character due to his callousness and coldness to those around him. But I hope to see the character evolve more over time. And of course some suspense is lost when we know that some of the characters live in the future and where they end up. The main characters companion/investment Scout also seems to develop in this story but that part isn't explored very well. It would be interesting to see more of what happened in future books or perhaps a novella.
