Publisher's summary

The Everfail will rise. His enemies will fall.

Hiral is the Everfail, the weakest person on the flying island of Fallen Reach. He trains harder than any warrior. Studies longer than any scholar.

But all his people are born with magic powered by the sun, flowing through tattoos on their bodies. Despite having enormous energy within, Hiral is the only one who can’t channel it; his hard work is worth nothing.

Until it isn’t.

In a moment of danger, Hiral unlocks an achievement with a special instruction: Access a Dungeon to receive a Class-Specific Reward.

It’s his first—and maybe last—chance for real power. Just one problem: all dungeons lay in the wilderness below the flying islands that humanity lives on, and there lay secrets and dangers that no one has survived.

New powers await, but so do new challenges. If he survives? He could forge his own path to power.

If he fails? Death will be the least of his problems.

Don't miss the next progression fantasy series from J.M Clarke, bestselling author of Mark of the Fool, along with C.J. Thompson. Unlock a weak-to-strong progression into power and a detailed litRPG system with unique classes, skills, dungeons, achievements, survival and evolution. Explore a mysterious world of fallen civilizations, strange monsters and deadly secrets.

If you loved Mark of the Fool you will love this

I really enjoyed the process of the main character growing into his powers, and the benter of the party members was my favourite part

Exceeded my Expectations

Picked this up on a friends recommendation and because I enjoy another series by one of the Authors. Going in I thought it would be a light read that followed along the usual paths. The dungeon bits dragged on a little but the world built is so engrossing the story was hard to put down.

Narration is the largest issue

It's hard for me to concentrate on the story and really embrace it. the overall story is good and I don't think that's the issue. the narrator seriously lacks range and that makes it really hard for me. if they pair him with a female narrator moving forward that would help tremendously.

Not the Mark of the Fool

I bought because of Mark of the Fool, this not the Mark of the Fool. It is filled with raid type farming. Swing for swing, cast for cast. Most of it drags along in a practice dungeon to improve the MCs skills. The other characters are just along for the ride and it’s hard to remember who is who. Narrator is good

Worth a read

While it starts a little slow and the character seems a little unreasonable at first the book does end up enjoyable with likable characters and a good mystery. Well right up till the last 3 hours, then it gets ....annoying .

There are however some burrs in the blade before then too.

Like the MC wants to save his stay points till he knows what to so with then. This reeks of plot for when he learns some super important thing in book 2 or something. The annoying thing is that he gets in a few life or death battles when he needs more power and never once thinks to spend his stats. Not only that he rarely uses his super powerful buffs or his terminal skill.

Then there his is his powers, he could do so much more with a bit of thought or experimentation. This can be forgiven for hes constantly rushing from battle to battle but. negation and aborsbtion, come on use those to take hits. Negate momentum or absorb the impact. Combine to Make a barrier. That's just the simplest of stuff and he could be doing loads more.

All in all will read next but damn if it doesnt grate. I hope book 2 will slow down to allow for skill learning and growth of powers.

Though the tone changes a bit at the end parts, so no clue where book 2 might lead.

Good book. Problem with character voices.

+
World building
magic system
multiple factions
intense action scenes
passable banter
very interesting enemies
"narration" voice is good
a lot of loot

-
individual character voices is lacking, hard to differentiate
mc, hoarded a lot of points while just breezed through most enemies removed urgency.
