Publisher's summary

Kerry Nietz, the award-winning science fiction author of Amish Vampires in Space and A Star Curiously Singing brings you Rhats!.

Beyond the boundaries of civilized space lies the region of the Muto Empire. Mutos are a mammalian race that resembles a cross between a human and a Terran rat. Though spread across thousands of worlds, mutos - or rhats, as they are sometimes called - trace their lineage to a single dark world that orbits a ruined....

Enough of that!

My name is Frohic, and I'm a muto. I've never seen the home-world, and I couldn't care less about civilization, empires, or space. Especially space. All I want is to survive in a family that sometimes forgets I exist. My mother is always pregnant, my dozen siblings are swarming over every available surface, and my father makes plan after plan to send us all away. Sure, our hovel is crowded, the food is sparse, but at least it's home.

Then everything goes tails up.

why'd it have to be rhats

Rhats is a fun space adventure. it features a race of beings known as Mutos. They resemble Rats and kind of act like them too. The worst part is feeling empathy for the poor protagonist forced to serve on a smuggler ship against his will, and then remembering to picture him looking like a rat.

appearances aside, I loved this short novel that honestly had a kind of Firefly feel to it.

The narrator brought the book to life, in an entertaining performance.

Looking forward to hopefully seeing the second Rhats book in audio soon.

Addictive

I didn't realize at first that this was written in a universe already created by a game that has gone through several generations over several decades. It takes the burden off the writer to create a universe and instead focus on the fun characters and clever plot.

The hero keeps proclaiming he is nothing special and yet he is entirely endearing. He truly is humble and his reactions to the strange new worlds into which he is thrust are hilarious and very relatable. Watching the other oddball characters orbit around him is a true delight.

Loved all the titles in this series.

A fun romp through a new world, not too distant from our own.

Initially this reminded me of many of the books I enjoyed growing up, with anthropomorphic or sentient animals (Redwall, Mrs Frisby & the Rats of NIMH, etc). As I progressed in the story, I found that it adeptly placed this protagonist into a futuristic sci fi world of significant scale. While this story only explored a few small corners of this world, over a relatively short period of time, it was an enjoyable journey with hints of great future potential. An excellent and enticing introduction.

I enjoyed the story as an adult, though it leaves me a little hungry for more depth. I appreciate the lack of some of the things often present in literature targeting an older audience, such as sexual content and profanity. I look forward to introducing some of my younger family members to this story, and its sequels.
