Publisher's summary

The next adventure in the High Republic begins expanding the new era of Star Wars, with a story set generations before Light of the Jedi.

It is an age of exploration. Jedi travel the galaxy, expanding their understanding of the Force and all the worlds and beings connected by it. Meanwhile, the Republic, led by its two chancellors, works to unite worlds in an ever-growing community among near and distant stars.

On the close-orbiting planets of Eiram and E’ronoh, the growing pains of a galaxy with limited resources but unlimited ambition are felt keenly. The two worlds’ hatred for each other has fueled half a decade of escalating conflict and now threatens to consume surrounding systems. The last hope for peace emerges when heirs from the planets’ royal families plan to marry.

Before lasting peace can be established, an assassination attempt targeting the couple tilts Eiram and E’ronoh back into all-out war. To save both worlds, Jedi Knight Gella Nattai volunteers to uncover the culprit, while Chancellor Kyong appoints her own son, Axel Greylark, to represent the Republic’s interests in the investigation.

But Axel’s deep distrust of the Jedi sparks against Gella’s faith in the Force. She’s never met such a puffed-up, privileged party boy, and he’s never met a more self-serious, relentless do-gooder. The harder they work to untangle the shadowy web of the investigation, the more complicated the conspiracy appears to be. With accusations flying and potential enemies in every shadow, the pair will have to work together to have any hope of bringing the truth to light and saving both worlds.

Slow to get to the point, but good.

Marc Thompson gives a good performance. Besides it a very slow lead up, it was a good story. I hope the sith during this time are tied in.

Not the strongest story but still excited for more (slight spoiler for path of deceit)

Unfortunately like another review, I have to agree that this is one of the more weaker stories in the high republic. Maybe a bit more than “Midnight Horizon”

Path of deceit was amazing on all fronts. marchions ancestors , the path of the open hand, it felt different yet kept me hooked.

CONS
Despite Marc Thompson always masterful narration (spoiler he kills it here too) I found myself struggling to follow along and almost care.. A lot of the characters aren’t likable, we barely follow any Jedi.. for the longest time it just feels like nothing is really happening… the part that bugged me the most was after hours in .. I still didn’t know who the antagonist was.
And it was a little weird hearing Marc Thompson do the mothers voice after the amazing job Erin Yvette did

PROS
Despite the cons.. The story world in interesting being that these particular planets end up where starlight beacon is stations. The worlds/cultures themselves are very interesting and I am curious to learn more about them.
Marc Thompson delivers another masterful performance. It’s just too bad the characters here don’t allow him to come close to the performance of marchion ro or Loden greatstorm

Overall if you are a fan of the series and don’t want to miss out I would give it a listen. The previous novels just set the bar really high and unfortunately this one fall a little short.

I’m sure the author put a tremendous amount of work into this story and nothing but love and respect to them. 🙏🏽

Confuses the timeline

Audio version narrated by Marc Thompson.

Reviewing from a retrospective point of view I just think this Phase misses overall. The book gets into the "forever war" between Eiram and E'ronoh, which still isn't resolved generations later. Knowing that makes the developments of this generation feel inconsequential. It also opens the tiresome Axel Greylark storyline. Axel is almost an interesting character but the time invested in him over the few novels he's in just doesn't feel worth it.

Great read!

It was very well told, and had a nice twist with the Romeo meets Juliet scenario, that was kind of unexpected. Overall a good read!

great performance... meh storyline

Mark Thompson is great as usual. it's the only reason I finished the book. maybe future books will tie this in better, but I don't really see the relevance of this title to the overall high republic story arc. Even still it wasn't very engaging.

Pretty Enjoyable!

Not a great story but really good, kinda written like a YA novel. However, I love the characters and their Romeo meets Juliet in a Star Wars setting. My only fault with the book is that it took so long with character building that in the end there wasn't enough action and mystery. Still had a good time.
