About this listen

The no-holds-barred final entry in the Monster Hunter Memoirs series from New York Times best-selling authors Larry Correia and John Ringo.

"This is New Orleans." That mantra had rung in Chad Gadenier's ears since his first day working in the Big Easy. Everything was different in New Orleans. The food. The climate. The monsters. Even the shadowy and reprehensible MCB was different. But that's just the beginning.

The real reason New Orleans is so different is a larval Great Old One growing day by day in power and just about ready to pop. If Chad can't convince "the powers that be" to get involved, not only New Orleans, but the entire world, is going to fall under the power of the nastiest of nasties.

Now on the outs with the US government and in exile from his usual job of saving the world, Chad must rally the forces of light against the coming darkness. The problem is one guy with a sword and a sub-gun isn't going to solve this one.

Fortunately, Chad's made a few friends over the years - and the Fey hate Old Ones as much as God's people, and they're not about to give up this world without a fight.

If the saints don't come marching in on this one...there won't be a final battle; there will be a final massacre. Now, where'd he put that number for the ditzy Fey princess?

Whoa is me...

It truly sucks that this is the last story that there will be with Iron Hand. I could have listened to stories from this character for many novels to come. Chad was a novel's hero to the end.

One of the Most Enjoyable Series I Have Ever Read

When I was looking for another Audible book, I looked for those performed by Oliver Wyman, an audio performer I put into the top 5 of all audio performers I have ever heard—and I’ve been listening to audio books since at least the late 1980s.

I saw Monster Hunter International.

Sounded intriguing. Was performed by Oliver Wyman. Even better.

And then I read a one star review from a pathetic snowflake whining on about all the emphasis on guns and weapons and killing and the author’s bad attitude about the government—and I thought, dude, your attitude shows me that this is probably a book for me.

And it was.

The snowflake’s attitude also told me that he probably had missed the whole point of the story and much else due to his gun phobia and his easily-wounded, dare I say, “butt-hurt,” PC nature.

And it only took about 10 minutes listening to know, yes, he had. Poor sucker.

But not poor me. I have now listened to TEN books of the series since the beginning of the Coronavirus insanity began. Only the latest, the 8th of the main series, I have not. The reason? It’s not performed by Oliver Wyman. If he’s dead, it’s forgivable; otherwise...

This volume, Saints, features a great character, Chad Gardinier, and tells a lot of backstory to the other books I’ve already read. It, as well as Sinners and Grunge, also featuring Chad Gardinier, was thoroughly enjoyable.

Since I have a doctorate in the biological sciences, a fairly deep background in religion, familiarity with a variety of occult organizations, themes, and literature, same for linguistics, languages, anthropology, economics, a personal knowledge of the sorts of people the author ridicules from my years in academia and education, and a very deep background, all the way to my childhood, of science fiction and fantasy, I am in a position to say the following with confidence born of long experience:

Larry Correia expertly weaves all these together to create a unique and consistent world, but not only that, an entertaining world, but not only that, a funny world, but not only that, a world with the feeling of a solid, underlying reality and characters that one quickly comes to understand and love.

And then, on top of all that, to have the talents of Oliver Wyman, whose vocal characterizations of these characters is so dead-on consistent with their personas as revealed in the story—what’s NOT to love about that?

So, a big thanks to the snowflake whose butt-hurt one star rating and description told me there was probably a goldmine here—and, since you were objective enough to give high ratings to Oliver Wyman, there’s still hope for you yet.

I like the series but he needs to get out of his comfort zone

Fun stories not but they’re not deep. He needs to get out of his comfort zone I have read other novels from this author and he’s like on a very tight leash his character seem like the seven dwarves but more corky they really don’t have deep stories
