Publisher's summary

Little Dusty was so excited the day he found the large sock monkey for sale in the thrift store. When he got Mister Socky home, there was much more to the toy than anyone suspected. Unfortunately for Dusty, Mister Socky ordered him to do some horrible things. Well into adulthood, Dusty finds himself under Mister Socky's spell.

Can the toy really talk, or is it all in his head? If it is real, what is Mister Socky's agenda? Find out in this tale where Ted meets Chucky in the form of Mister Socky.

By far the sickest book I have ever listened too..

I use to love sock monkeys. I thought they were so cute. OMG, they are just freaky little psycho killers now.

Mister Socky

Any additional comments?

Seven year old Dusty spies a 4 foot tall sock monkey in a thrift store and convinces his mother to buy it for him.Soon after, 'Mr Socky' starts talking to Dusty and telling him to do things. What come next is a great little disturbing short novel narrated with feeling by Joe Hempel. He becomes Dusty and is a mean Socky.A must 'listen' for any horror fan.

Demon Sock

Extreme Horror, very graphic and gory author. This book is the typical Tim Miller. Quick fun listen and not for the faint of heart but will not let my niece or nephew get a sock toy! This tale of death, murder, rape and mayhem

This book very engagingly starts out with little boy shopping in a thrift store where he ends up buying a creepy looking sock monkey, even though the toy is creepy looking to his mom, it becomes a favorite toy for Dusty right then. This story entails not only the scariness caused by dolls and black-button eyed monkeys, it also involves a significant bloody violence, definitely not recommended for the light hearted.

Although, it seems pretty appealing initially, it gets confusing midway and terrifying throughout, the story-line wasn’t too convincing. The premise of living and reliving the crimes is not persuading enough to accept the Mister Socky as entertaining. It sort of lost its horrific charm when there was explaining of the clutter and confusion caused somewhere in between the book. No doubt, it was frightening until the very end but it was difficult to go along with the story line.

This tale of death, murder, rape and mayhem is for people who would be interested in not your halloweeny-ghost-like horror books but for hard-core crimes and what goes in the criminal’s mind. Certainly, you might want to sit down for this one and let yourself into it for a couple of hours.

Overall, the narration by Joe Hempel was excellent with Mister Socky’s voice being quite scary, well paced narration and no production issues. The gory details in the book are alarming if you’re fine with it, then this one you’d be able to enjoy. This is surprisingly very short, but very elaborate, the author manages to cover pretty much the whole life (and after life) of the little boy Dusty, the small poem at the very end sure will give you creeps if you manage to finish it.

Creepy as Heck!

Extreme horror, with a side order of camp, Mister Socky is NOT for the faint of heart! I used to love sock monkeys, but after listening to this, I'm purging them from my life, especially since I still have a kid at home!

Don't trust the monkey!

If you could sum up Mister Socky in three words, what would they be?

Second-hand Murder & Mayhem

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Indeed, trying to predict how Chucky-like this was going

What about Joe Hempel’s performance did you like?

The way he portrayed Mr. Socky....it was dripping with malicious intent

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not really extreme, but I found it very amusing

A truly messed up good read

If you could sum up Mister Socky in three words, what would they be?

warped day dream

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

When I first started listening to this story. I honestly couldn't believe what I was listening to. There are a couple of gory parts that were just... warped. Basically I felt that if other people around me knew what I was listening too. mouths would open... Heck I was just super surprised at some scenes and felt that I should pause or skip ahead since the scenario was just SO wrong. I definitely recommend this story if you do not mind warped, gorish scenes and are into stories with surprise factors throughout.

What does Joe Hempel bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narrator was excellent - he was able to portray Dusty the mislead and easily controlled child/youth then grownup and Mister Socky the provocateur adequately. The ending was actually quite surprising - it took you in a direction you wouldn't expect.
