Publisher's summary

This boxed set contains three books in the USA Today best-selling Glass and Steele series:

  • The Watchmaker's Daughter.
  • The Mapmaker's Apprentice.
  • The Apothecary's Poison.

India Steele is desperate. Her father is dead, her fiancé took her inheritance, and no one will employ her, despite years working for her watchmaker father. Indeed, the other London watchmakers seem frightened of her. Alone, poor, and at the end of her tether, India takes employment with the only person who’ll accept her–an enigmatic and mysterious man from America. A man who possesses a strange watch that rejuvenates him when he’s ill.

Matthew Glass must find a particular watchmaker, but he won’t tell India why any old one won’t do. Nor will he tell her what he does back home, and how he can afford to stay in a house in one of London’s best streets. So when she reads about an American outlaw known as the Dark Rider arriving in England, she suspects Mr. Glass is the fugitive. When danger comes to their door, she’s certain of it. But if she notifies the authorities, she’ll find herself unemployed and homeless again–and she will have betrayed the man who saved her life.

With a cast of quirky characters, an intriguing mystery, and a dash of romance, this thrilling historical fantasy series will keep you listening late into the night.

Worth the listen!

Great characters, novel plot twists on cozy themes, and just enough sexual tension to be worth the listen. My biggest disappointment was a different voice actor for books 2 & 3 after getting involved with the characters & their voices in book 1. But, overall, enjoyed all three books & highly recommend.

Change in voices!

After the first book the narrator changed and so did the voices.
I think a book set should stay the same.

Value for 1 credit

It’s my opinion that this series is geared toward middle school readers.
I’m writing this review after listening to the whole series so I can say the books get slightly more interesting. These books are medium for plotting (definite holes), lower for emotional intelligence, high in editing and very superior in marketing.

Chapter 1: Book 1: The Watchmaker’s Daughter starts with Ms Steele as absolutely idiotic - juvenile and unprofessional. No adult person in their right mind would give her any credence. Added to this scene, and if I remember my English laws correctly, she could have sued Eddie Hardcastle for breaking off their engagement. I guess this is an “alternate“ England where the same laws wouldn’t apply, though this isn’t really communicated until near the end. Sad that this info was the first I needed to get out.
Miss India Steele gets herself hired as an assistant to Mr Matthew Glass in his search for a specific watch maker who created his most special watch. India finds out why she is being blackballed by the Watchmakers Guild. Wish I could enjoy Willie but she’s so annoying so much of the time.
Powell does an ok job with narration.

Chapter 20: Book 2: The Mapmaker’s Apprentice
The Chief of Police pushes Glass (& Steele) into searching for his missing son who turns out to have Mapmaker Magic from his maternal grandfather.
(Ch27) Saturday off! Not at that time in England’s Industrial Revolution.
Hussey does an ok job with narration.

Chapter 42: Book 3: The Apothecary’s Poison
Glass & Steele investigate the death of an apothecary when they become the primary suspect(s). Threats, shooting & kidnapping ensue. They have to endure intense matchmaking by his Aunt.
Hussey does an ok job with narration.
