About this listen

Ever wonder what your therapist is really thinking? Now you can find out...a hilarious, thought-provoking and surprising new book that takes us behind the scenes of a therapist's world.

Meet Lori Gottlieb, an insightful and compassionate therapist whose clients present with all kinds of problems. There’s the struggling new parents; the older woman who feels she has nothing to live for; the self-destructive young alcoholic; and the terminally ill 35-year-old newlywed.

And there’s John, a narcissistic television producer, who frankly just seems to be a bit of a jerk. Over the course of a year, they all make progress. But Gottlieb is not just a therapist - she’s also a patient who's on a journey of her own.

Interspersed with the stories of her clients are her own therapy sessions, as Gottlieb goes in search of the hidden roots of a devastating and life-changing event.

Personal, revealing, funny and wise, Maybe You Should Talk to Someone opens a rare window onto a world that is most often bound by secrecy, offering an illuminating tour of a profoundly private process.

Don’t listen to the last five or six chapters while driving!

I loved this book and all the characters in it. It was difficult to not form a connection with each of the characters in the book as you shared their journey through therapy. I found the last five or six chapters emotionally difficult to listen to and while driving the car to work experienced floods of tears as each characters story was brought to a conclusion. A satisfying listen that has left me questioning my life, my decisions, my stuckness in my situation. Great to listen to a book that makes you reflect on your circumstances and how different life could be if you could find the courage to take the required steps. Maybe I need to talk to someone!

Excellent book about living in a healthy relationship with oneself

I enjoyed the jargon free narrative style of the book in the first person. The interjections in the story of snippets of theory was a strong way to create analogy.

Would recommend it every time- mostly enjoyed the easy listening

Wonderful insights into your potential therapist

as a person who has been to therapy, this was such a fascinating deep dive into the mental terrain of my therapists. naturally everyone is different, but I loved the intimate sharing Lori did in this book. by the end, I felt like her friend.

Insight into psychological therapy and people’s thought processes

I can always tell if a book have a profound impact on me when I wake up in the middle of the night and think about the book. (I’ve stumbled upon this book at exactly the right time and I might even listen to it again in future.) I loved the way in which this book made me reflect on my own emotional perspective of my life but also gave me insight into other people’s thought processes and struggles. Al of us have insecurities. (It can almost serve as a sort of self-help book but in a fictional format.) Loved it!

Informative and very entertaining!

I've always been fascinated by how therapists cope with all the "mess" they have to fix in other peoples' lives! One friend tells me a secret and the burden weighs on me like a boulder; the thought that therapists get to be hundreds of peoples' confidantes always boggled my mind!

This was a fascinating insight into what being a therapist and a "normal" human looks like; how the 2 coexist perfectly.

I loved every chapter! The story was intriguing and the narrator was amazing.

Will definitely read it again and again!

Very interesting mix

This book was self help mixed in with what seemed like a story. I really enjoyed this book and I feel a bit sad that it’s over. I really liked the narrator.
