About this listen

"A groundbreaking book that redefines what it means to be in a relationship." (John Gray, PhD., best-selling author of Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus)

We already rely on science to tell us what to eat, when to exercise, and how long to sleep. Why not use science to help us improve our relationships? In this revolutionary book, psychiatrist and neuroscientist Dr. Amir Levine and Rachel Heller scientifically explain why some people seem to navigate relationships effortlessly, while others struggle.

Discover how an understanding of adult attachment—the most advanced relationship science in existence today—can help us find and sustain love. Pioneered by psychologist John Bowlby in the 1950s, the field of attachment posits that each of us behaves in relationships in one of three distinct ways:

  • Anxious people are often preoccupied with their relationships and tend to worry about their partner's ability to love them back
  • Avoidant people equate intimacy with a loss of independence and constantly try to minimize closeness.
  • Secure people feel comfortable with intimacy and are usually warm and loving.

Attached guides listeners in determining what attachment style they and their mate (or potential mate) follow, offering a road map for building stronger, more fulfilling connections with the people they love.

*Includes a PDF of the attachment style questionnaire

Critic reviews

"A groundbreaking book that redefines what it means to be in a relationship." (John Gray, PhD., best-selling author of Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus)

"Amir Levine and Rachel Heller have written a very smart book: It is clear, easy to read, and insightful. It's a valuable tool whether you are just entering a relationship with a new partner or—as in my case—even after you've been married 21 years, and had thought you knew everything about your spouse." (Mariette DiChristina, editor in chief, Scientific American)

"Attached is a fascinating and enormously useful guide to one of life's most important ventures—finding and sustaining a secure, satisfying love relationship. Based on 25 years of research, laced with vivid and instructive examples, and enriched with interesting and well-designed exercises, the book provides deep insights and invaluable skills that will benefit every reader." (Phillip R. Shaver, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Psychology, University of California, Davis and Past President, International Association for Relationship Research)

Great resource presented in a thoughtful manner

Attached has information to demystify why humans fall for one another then either find their attachment and intimacy needs met or drive each other away in frustration. Theories are realistic and presented thoughtfully and with diverse examples. Although heavily hetero the authors and presenter does make the bridge to non-cis relationships as well.

A highlight is the “okay now that we know this, how do we apply this to our lives” section. Take your time. It’s worth it.

Helps with addressing attachment issues

This narrator was easy to listen to at double time because the concepts were discussed in many different ways. This is a relatively short read for understanding complex and common relationship issues. It helped me identify my own attachment style with its pitfalls as well as what I have already done to have a more vulnerable and healthy romantic relationship as well as how to grow in the future. This book was recommended from the book Come As You Are... another excellent read.

Soooo practical and helpful!

I started listening to this book on the recommendation of a relationship coach. I went into it thinking that I knew a lot about attachment styles, but this book does a great job of applying the science of attachment to our every day lives and relationships! I have found it extremely helpful in looking at my self and my behavior as well as accessing future mates.

Dead on and clear!!

Such a wealth of knowledge and Insightful. I wish I had this book from the beginning of my relationship journey and should be put used in schools to teach the young about these attachment styles early on and help them in adulthood.

Great book! Concept missed m..

This book was great! It really made me think and actually get back into the dating scene. The one thing I though was off were a few examples of “avoidant” that were obvious narcissists who were abusive. There is a distinction.

Helpful... I think

This was a book recommendation from my therapist - I think to help me explore my difficulties in relationships. Now that I’ve learned that I’m probably a mixture of avoidant and anxious, I have to admit that I feel a little lost. This book seemed helpful for recognizing the different attachment styles, but despite trying to introduce methods of dealing with what others bring to relationships, it’s not so great for learning how to change yourself - especially the avoidant behaviors. But it’s still eye opening and will have me thinking differently about my approach to other people in my life.
